The most "defensive" position I seen Messi for Argentina is a role behind two wingers and one striker...and other times he's their main striker or main attack point. Messi form hasn't picked up since Diego left, it's just been same. Last "good game" Messi had for Argentina was against Brazil in November and even that he wasn't playing like he would in Barcelona.

Why would Riquelme go to world cup?
He did shit all in the qualifiers and wasn't even match-fit because he
didn't play for Boca or anyone. During the world cup time, I don't think
football was on Riquelme's mind. Diego made a right decision, bring Riquelme would have been pointless when he barely played any games leading to the WC.
Also in the World Cup he played Riquelme role only one against Germany, the other times he played behind forward(s) or as a forward. But no way you can blame Messi shit Argentina form on Maradona because even before Diego arrived, Messi didn't have great impacts in Argentina team like you would expect.
