Is your team stronger now than it was 5 years ago?
Guest- Guest
The question was asked in the Wisla thread on a Polish forum I frequent and I thought it'd be an interesting topic to bring up.
Do you think your team is stronger now than it was 5 years ago? And Why/Why not?

5 years ago we pulled off the great escape to not go down to league 1.
So yeah, not by much but deffo better.

2006 was the year we were bought by Red Bull , 5 years later we are better, no doubt. Maybe not a better manager (Arena vs. Backe) but better team overall.

Easiest question ever. Bad thread is bad.

Easiest question ever for me too. No, we were stronger 5 years ago. It's all good though, we are going through a growth period with our players, just like we did with the players 6 years ago, I fully expect to win the title 4-5 years from now.
Hopefully I'm alive to see it.

Here's our team from the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea 5 years ago, our last meaningful game of that campaign
Subs: Howard, Evra, Brown, Richardson, van Nistelrooy
Notable injuries: Scholes, Solskjaer, Smith, possibly Fletcher
Weaker then without a doubt. A few months later we were far stronger though, stronger than today, in the first team at least. Vidic and Evra showed their world class talents, Scholes was exceptional on his return, Carrick was better in midfield than O'Shea, Giggs was better on the left than Park.
Chelsea at the time were far stronger than they are today, easily the 2nd best team in Europe, they'd have walked the League this season. It should surprise me that Luke finds this question difficult, but it doesn't, because he's a bit of a spastic.

No. The players who are still here and were there 5 years ago are younger. We had a bigger squad. Mourinho was in charge then.

About equal I think. Although that team had Ze Roberto.

Talent wise - yes. Experience and winning mentality wise - Hell no.
Even though in 2006 we had Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, Ljungberg, Cashley. Etc.. But they were all ageing. :shifty;

5 years ago we finished outside the top 2 for the only time in my lifetime. And Paul Le Guen was about to become our new boss. So yeah, we're better now, although we still had some quality players back then. We're nowhere near as good as we were 10 years ago though.

Our new defence and midfield are better whereas our old strike force is better purely because of Forssell not Heskey

Shit. On a whole I would say no, 2006 we were absolutely unstoppable.

Hell no. Ahly was at its strongest 5 years ago. Now they are shit. Barca are its strongest now though.

Brown,
Mkandawire, Beckwith, Jeannin,
Green....................................... Travis,
Stanley , Ferrell, Purdie,
Stansfield , Williams
Pitman, Fleetwood, Ipoua, Mawson, Carey-Bertram.
I would say this team from 5years ago is a bit stronger than our current one. Mkandawire has gone on to play for Millwall consistently, whilst the two strikers went on to play for League 1 clubs. Stanley is in the League 2 play-off final at the moment whilst Beckwith is at Northampton but better than our current CB's.
We still have Green, Fleetwood and Pitman (Who is now our manager )
Brown went to Bury before moving to South Africa, i would say he is about equal to Bartlett atm but Bartlett has greater potential.
Jeannin, Travis and Ferrel are in the non-league. Ipoua was amazing for Hereford but didn't take football seriously enough after dropping out off Athletico Madrid's books, he retired and was last known to be a British Gas
I would prefer this squad to our current one. Stansfield lost his fight against bowel cancer last year, he was one of the good guys.
