Do they have to be current players? Because if we add players from previous years we'd have a wider range of players to choose from.

I'm not a mind reader, but I'm guessing the rules are.
-You can't pick the same players as each other. The point is to tactically build a unique team which is better than everyone elses.
-People who get the latter picks won't get the world beaters, but are going to have better squad players. In the end, this is about your whole 14 man squad, so even if you don't have Messi it shouldn't matter that much.
-Current players only. If the point is to vote on which is better, then picking players from the past people might not even know of, yet alone have seen play, different periods etc etc is going to confuse things.
