Re: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
It is madness but unfortunately it's the direction football is taking. However, some people also view it as a risk which you have to take in these fickle markets, pays off and you get a player who could be worth 20m plus and not having to pay a more lucrative sum.

Re: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
It wouldn't be £10m upfront. It'd be 4/5 with add ons based on his success later in his career I imagine.
Don't think it's madness at all.

Re: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
javier pastore costed palermo 10m when we buy him from argentina league where he was awarded best u21 player in that league
is this chamberlin boy achieving similar feat to being worth that much? i bet if he was italian boy he would be worth 1/4 of that amount, probably even less

No, it shows that Southampton don't really want to sell him, so will put a high price on him to try and keep interest away from him.

Pretty much all transfers are payed via clauses and aren't up front cash anyway, usually monthly sums.

Re: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
no is show how overprice english players is. i think because there is very limited quantiy of good english players, any english player that might be good enough for epl has value inflated because of homegrown rule and fact that not many good english players around so everything is overprice
look at price of player such as kjaer who is linke with chelsea for price approx 12m pound, they will buy him and not some overate and overprice english player like shawcross who is value by pulis at 20m pound

Re: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Wasn't Bale like £5m upfront with clauses that could rise to 10?
Pretty sure a few of you at the time thought that was mad and way over priced. Look at him now, being touted to be worth 2/3 times that.
Same with Walcott.
You pay for the potential and hope they reach it. Chamberlain is one of the hottest English youth prospects at the present time, so he's gonna be worth a tidy amount....

Good points. Especially about the homegrown rule thing, that probably adds some pounds.

Wasnt Bale and Walcott in the Championship though? I know it's only one division lower, but paying 10 million for a 3rd division 18 year old is too much, even if buying off potential.
I do think that English players are overpriced though, part of it has to due with what mauro said, part of it has to do with the fact that I think English managers/directors of football/transfer guys trust English players more than foreign players (understandable really) and so they are willing to pay the extra dollar for someone they feel is secure.

Re: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Bale would cost about the same as is being touted by the media towards Chamberlain. So no not half that at all And it isn't much different at all, Chamberlain is showing League 1 isn't good enough for him already. You'd see that if you had actually watched him play. But I'm sure you were just watching McEachran in some reserve match while knocking one out ()
Walcott was like £5m upfront too, with add ons to be like 10/15m I think. So about the same.
