Why do Spanish teams put high release clauses in contracts?

Just wondered what the point is when they will never be met. Wouldn't it be just worth not bothering at all?

Yes, but they're required to have one by law.

You have to put one in legally so its just so no one will buy them.

Although they can still accept a lower bid. Legally they have too, but they could still accept a bid lower then the release clause.

If it meets the release clause then they have to accept. I think.

So if Man City offered Barca £300m for Messi they'd have permission to speak to him.

Pretty much. It all depends on the player then, If the player wants to go then that's that. I heard Real Madrid matched Iniesta's buy out clause about 2 or 3 years ago I think. But Iniesta didn't want to go so they left it at that.
