Neither am I. However, on the same line of thought, I don't see any reason to believe in it either.Dan wrote:polska. wrote:Name them.
As far as I know, even the Classical Greeks knew the world was round, as did the Mayans and even the fucking ancient Sumerians, whom were the first city-states in the world. The Church said the world was flat and so Europeans stuck with it until Astronomers like Polish Astronomer Copernicus said otherwise.
Besides, that is kind of the point. Humans didn't know any better back then, thus the need for an explanation (therefore the need for a god in certain Near Eastern societies, Gods for the Greeks, Egyptians, Sumerians, Mexicans, Incans and Hindus.). Now, humans do know better, therefore rendering acceptable societal constructs such as Religion, obsolete.
Fuck, I don't know their names. But they did.
Just because we have no proof now, doesn't mean there's nothing there. I'm not religious in the slightest, but I'm not stupid enough to completely rule it out because it's something that I and the entire human race don't know for certain.

So just because we can't prove it at this moment, it can't possibly exist?
I never said that. I said there is no reason to believe it exists.
We have no evidence in the existence of intelligent beings in our solar system, yet many people believe there is intelligent life out there. Are they just as "crazy"?
Erm, we do have evidence. We are the evidence! If life rose up on Earth, then it sure as hell can rise up in other planets with similar conditions to Earth.
Besides, not the same thing. It'd be like believing intelligent life exists somewhere in the galaxy whilst having no evidence of organic life on Earth or anywhere else.
Why is there no reason to believe God exists?

Because there simply isn't any. If there was, I am sure you would've brought it up during the last few months of arguing over this topic.ahlycotc wrote:polska. wrote:

You got any evidence for that? Bede clearly described the earth as spherical in his c8th writings, Saint Hildegard did likewise in the c12th. Dante's Divine Comedy (c14th) clearly depicts the earth as a globe.
In fact I have just done some digging, and it seems that the myth was started by Washington Irving in his c19th biography of Columbus. The little charlatan makes the story more interesting and dangerous by creating the myth that people believed the world was flat as a result of suppression of the truth by catholic theologians. It was bollocks.
Found this on the net.
Am on the same side as you too, Polska.

But regardless of what a few religious folks running monasteries back then thought, the Church as a whole still tried to repress scientists for the most part, though obviously that wasn't totally true, IIRC The Pope actually rewarded Copernicus for his Astronomical findings.

WHAT EVIDENCE IS THEIR TO SUPPORT THE THEORY OF GOD?Dan wrote:polska. wrote:Because there simply isn't any. If there was, I am sure you would've brought it up during the last few months of arguing over this topic.
Fucking hell.
That's worse than if Ahly said God exists because he does.
Please tell me, because it would change my viewpoint completely if even there was a tiny amount of evidence that could suggest the plausibility of an existence of an entity somewhat similar to God. As far as I know, there isn't any.

As far as I am concerned, I am just stating facts and coming to a conclusion based on those facts.

Re: The Atheist Thread
And this is where I make my leave from this thread.
As I said all of these threads more or less eventually boil down to:
Aethiest: GOD DOESN'T EXIST
Believer: YES HE DOES
A: YES (says something related to God)
B: NO, no real proof.
Rinse and repeat.

What a silly response. I am asking you what evidence you have to suggest that a God does not exist and cannot possibly exist (i.e. how does science replace God). As a person who doesn't believe in a God, you should find this easy to answer. Don't say there is no evidence to suggest God's existence. Why do you think there are billions of religious people then?

So now it's a fact that God doesn't exist?

why? You can't prove he doesn't exist therefore you can't rule out the chance of it regardless of how foolish you think it is. It Is relevant because it is a major point in any religious discussion.
