Of course a player like Puyol wouldn't be dropped if Ronaldo joins, because they don't play anywhere near the same position. Pedro would be on top of that list, because it's either Pedro or Messi. No other player would be in consideration.

That's where you're not in the spirit of my theory though.

If Guardiola wanted to of course Puyol could be dropped.

    Valdez
    Alves Pique Abidal
    Pedro Xavi Busquets Iniesta
    Ronaldo Villa Messi

....that is possible......I'm not saying it would happen as Puyol wouldn't be dropped but you can't seriously say that Barcelona and Guardiola would not play any other formation than 4-3-3 to get Ronaldo into the team...? I think the fact that Pedro is the only viable replacement for Ronaldo sums up my point that Pedro is a fringe player in the Barcelona XI. If he wasn't the obvious fall guy then Guardiola might think about changing formation...but he doesn't have to as swapping Pedro for Ronaldo is a perfect straight swap.

Wtf.....I mean in the Barcelona XI.

You're hardly going to take Messi off and put Casillas on are you? That would be stupid.....

Again showing your ignorance of Barcelona.

Jesus christ just give up, Barcelona play 4-3-3. They have played that ever since Cruyff became manager back in like 1990. They will continue to use it as their primary formation while he has a say in the club.

.....I clearly said that example is not realistic and Barcelona would not kick out Puyol to go 3-5-2.

As far as I can remember Barcelona have used 4-3-3...that doesn't mean it will always be the same way. They've never been in a situation where they've bought an amazing world class player and the only way to have him in the team is to change formation. That just suggests that Barcelona choose their tactics first and players later......that's fine and whilst I still think my theory works to an extent...Barcelona is one of the worst examples.

    *oops double post doh

A fringe player is one who can barely get into the starting eleven as it is, not in the future. facepalm

Is Ronaldo better than Pedro? Yes.
Is Pedro the worst player in Barca's XI? No.

Therefore, Pedro isn't the "fringe of the XI" if such a phrase ever existed. I think what you are really trying to say is "Pedro is the fringe of Barca's starting XI wingers" which bears as much meaning as saying "a bronze medalist is the worst of the medalists".

why different? ur base is that the player is fringe if he is replaced. is have nothing to do with status of importance in the team if it means he could being replaced by better player

If Pedro isn't then who is? Abidal and Busquets are the only other contenders.....and I never said specifically that Pedro is THE worst..several times I've said he's in the bottom 3. That said out of the worst players Pedro is the most convenient player to be kicked out for Ronaldo.

Ranking a player among the whole XI means you have to ignore the fact that they are playing in different positions. So I'm going to rank them on importance...

    Puyol/Pique
    Pedro/Alves/Busquets

Hmm well I'd say Maxwell/Abidal count as 1 player as only 1 will ever play at the same time.....and for me Valdez is more important and Alves definitely is.....but meh.....can't expect everyone to have the same opinion or it'd be boring
