It's quite nice seeing two people have a friendly conversation for once.

Besides reading, I think that there is no better way to learn truth than to just light up a doobie and toke with a diverse group of 4/5 individuals.Sean wrote:Thats cool. Whats the best way to learn outside of formal education in your opinion Glen?

You wouldn't be advocating the use of illegal narcotics?

I haven't, I had a heart attack when they all but decriminizalized marijuana in DC. Having to change my sheets from the bottom bunk to the top bunk every Saturday night because my roommate was high and drunk simultaneously made me hate my life & those substances even more.Sean wrote:Woah Glen, you've changed man.

Re: Chat Thread
I read a couple of German novels last summer & my reading improved massively. Die Geschichte von Hern Sommer & Eine Liebe Aus Nichts were the books, but I am sure you can find something much more interesting, they were pretty bad. Don't read anything over 100 pages or too complex, though. I also tried to visit Der Spiegel a few times a week.Sean wrote:Glen Miller wrote:

My German teacher always encouraged us to watch German sitcoms but I never bothered, and that's probably why my speaking/listening lags so far behind. However, there are 2 German films that I enjoyed, the first especially:

The Lives of Others? I would say that that's a reasonable reaction, it's a masterpiece.

I thought I would study Government when I arrived, but then I realized how irritating political people are and how much more interesting and entertaining apolitical people are, so I've gone off of that. I have taken a few econ & history classes and enjoyed those, so I might major/minor or double major in those.Keyser Söze wrote:What are you leaning towards majoring in, Glen?

Are you basing that on students from your University or just people in general?Glen Miller wrote:I thought I would study Government when I arrived, but then I realized how irritating political people are and how much more interesting and entertaining apolitical people are, so I've gone off of that. Economics is something I'd like to do. History in secondary school consisted of nothing but WW1 or WW2 so I have an impression that it's incredibly boring.

Re: Chat Thread
A bit of both, I guess. It's probably particularly bad at my school because of its strengths & location, but I don't really like the people who actively fulfill stereotypes-the Republicans who went to elite private schools & dress in pastel colors & yell about Adam Smith/the Democrats who also went to elite private schools & try to turn every discussion towards sexism when they aren't handing out contraceptives at the Birth Control Club desk. I don't mind politics or discussing it, but too many kids wear it on their sleeves and make it impossible for me to view them as what they are, young students, outside of some political schema.Keyser Söze wrote:Are you basing that on students from your University or just people in general?Glen Miller wrote:I thought I would study Government when I arrived, but then I realized how irritating political people are and how much more interesting and entertaining apolitical people are, so I've gone off of that. SBSP can confirm or deny this, but history in a US public school is almost entirely about 1776 with some semesters discussing how the US saved the French and British in WWII. The other semesters are also about the USA. I've enjoyed econ so far, but I have had limited exposure to it so far, so we'll see how it goes.
