Bummer for Messi.  If he takes that chance he had early in the second half, Argentina wins and the GOAT debate is over.  So by a matter of a couple feet, the debate continues.  He'll be 31 in Russia, still young enough to be awesome but I suspect he won't be quite as quick.  That'll be his last real chance to cement his legacy.

these FIFA awards never makes senses, in 2002 kahn received and not ronaldo, in 2006 zidane took it but he was very overrated in that WC and did not deserve as well

FIFA WC awards = political decisions

Messi shouldn't have won the award on the basis of how it is defined, which is as a most outstanding player award.  However, if it was defined as a most valuable player award, Messi would have certainly deserved that.  Where would Argentina be without Messi?  Every major moment for them in this world cup, every key goal, involved Messi in some meaningful way.

No one really deserves it if you go by most outstanding.

Correction: it's the award given to the best player.
