so you would only worry about getting charged? How selfish of you.Larry Beale wrote:Ed wrote:You are saying letting someone die is as bad as killing someone? Ok so why dont you give more to charity? Murderer.
Both cases could be classed as 2nd degree murder, I (and most sane people) would rather save three and get charged with one then save one and get charged with three

I just saved three people from death and could end up in jail.
Yep, very selfish.

But you killed a man. Then there is me, i didnt kill anyone, i just happened to witness a horrible tragedy in which 3 people were run over by a trainLarry Beale wrote:Ed wrote:so you would only worry about getting charged? How selfish of you.

The reaction to this thread is completely unfair. Jela has taken a very narrow view by just expounding the legal minutiae. I'm sure there are plenty of people who couldn't look into the eyes of a human being and kill them even if it saved the lives of another three.

Good question. I'd let the three people die, no doubt about it.

Re: So You're by a train track...
You work for the train station and control the track directions. One of the tracks has a broken rail and if you do not fix it before the train goes over it, the train itself will derail and kill the hundreds of people on the train. You go out there to tighten the tracks and make sure the rails are stable enough for the train to pass over it. However you look out into the distance and notice your 3 year old son followed you and is standing on the tracks. Unable to hear your cries to have him move out of the way, and having nowhere to turn, your son stands on the tracks oblivious to the oncoming train that will instantly kill the boy.
The train is coming.. you have seconds to decide..
Hold down the tracks and allow the train to go through and save hundreds.. but kill your only son.
Or let the train derail and save your only son.

Re: So You're by a train track...
Well if this is the case, I'd jump in front of the cunt myself. I either let 3 people die, get charged with negligent whatever, and spend ages in prison having no life. Or I pull the lever, kill one person and spend ages in prison having no life. Lose either way, I'd rather be dead.Larry Beale wrote:Ed wrote:no you are confusing yourself, you're actions (pulling the lever) directly lead to that one person dying.
Yes but by you seeing the situation and having the ability to effect the outcome and doing nothing to save those three people you could be charged with 2nd degree murder.

The fact that some people don't understand what Ed is trying to point out with the "let die vs. kill" thing makes me fear for the world's future.

I would untie the guy who is on his own and then leave the lever to kill the other 3 people anyway.

I was thinking along these lines but then I thought of a better idea - pull the lever so the train runs over the one on their own, then pull the lever again and wait for the next train to squish the other three.

I'd try to figure out a way to kill all four.

Che, they all understand.. they just don't give a fuck and want to be difficult.
"letting die" and "killing" in this situation is moot to me. Idgaf.
I'll gladly kill the 1 to save the 3. But it also depends on who, in my opinion, is more valuable to society, it will decide who I save. Srs.

Trouble is, in this (hypothetical) situation, you don't really have time to interview all 4 candidates.

Considering I always get telemarketers on the phone who are blatantly Indian telling me their name is "Paul" or "Sam" then I wouldn't trust them on that.
Just get rid of the group of 3, the world's overpopulated as it is.
