Sean has said some unspeakable things to/about me in the past, RR. I know that I should not retaliate, but sometimes, as a sinful human being, I find myself stooping to his level.Mr. Kurtz wrote:Don't be mean to Sean, Glen.

Yes, that was most unfortunate. But that's all in the past now. I've returned to engage in intriguing football discussion and share light-hearted banter.

I've been thinking about criteria that would show a manager at a small club would be successful at a bigger club. The case of Di Matteo and the hype - for lack of a better word - around Martinez are especially on my mind. Any thoughts, gentlemen?

It certainly is an interesting topic. Especially when you look at what happened to Andre Villas Boas at Chelsea. I suppose he needs to be a commanding presence that demands respect. I suppose playing style is also very significant as well.Rei Andros wrote:I've been thinking about criteria that would show a manager at a small club would be successful at a bigger club. Re: Chat Thread
It's dependant on the manager in my view. Some managers are adaptable to circumstances, such as managing a struggling team to managing a top class team, almost chameleon-esque, whereas other managers seems to have a set ethos in which they will try to impose wherever they go. It's difficult to come up with a certain formula for a manager to follow to translate their managerial talent from big club to small. You look at Hodgson, who is a genius in charge of the underdog team, yet can't manage to bring that success when he's managing a top team.Rei Andros wrote:I've been thinking about criteria that would show a manager at a small club would be successful at a bigger club. Story cut short - I reckon some managers are more suited to the big club job than others.

Re: Chat Thread
in the case of Vilas-Boas I think he had everything except the know how of how to deal with a dip in form of his players. The mentality if you will.
Delving more into the case of Martinez. The mentality is definitely there. Surviving enough relegation battles is more than enough experience. A good playing style is present as well. I've always put an inability to teach his team to defend as a black mark against Martinez, but how much of that is really down to his coaching? Could it just be the players as his disposal?
I saw A very interesting point recently that put forward a theory for Wigan's seasonal mediocrity followed by a miraculous recovery. It said that Wigan's loss of its best players over the summer, and their inferior/inexperienced replacements meant that Martinez had to basically start from scratch each season in trying to implement his style.
If you accept this theory, would it be enough to justify Wigan's consistent rollercoaster rides?
@ayvee: I agree with everything you said, but I still can't help but think there must be some markers that can be used to make some sort of projection.

Re: Chat Thread
That theory is compelling, but maybe a bit idealistic. It's probably a combination of that and the realisation of him/the players that their situation is desperate, and that they really need to pull their fingers out and get results.Rei Andros wrote:I saw A very interesting point recently that put forward a theory for Wigan's seasonal mediocrity followed by a miraculous recovery. Re: Chat Thread
Perhaps its a topic that can only be really explored with some historical context. Some anoraking is at hand.
This topic brings Hector Cuper to mind for some reason. He's now considered to be a small time manager, this is a coach who lost two Champions League finals. Imagine if he had won them? I really do feel sorry for him.
Also Joachim Loew. I mean, he never made it as a coach in the Bundesliga, but now he's one of the top international managers in the world. Where does that something like that come from? It's mind-boggling.
