Delving more into the case of Martinez. The mentality is definitely there. Surviving enough relegation battles is more than enough experience. A good playing style is present as well. I've always put an inability to teach his team to defend as a black mark against Martinez, but how much of that is really down to his coaching? Could it just be the players as his disposal?
I saw A very interesting point recently that put forward a theory for Wigan's seasonal mediocrity followed by a miraculous recovery. It said that Wigan's loss of its best players over the summer, and their inferior/inexperienced replacements meant that Martinez had to basically start from scratch each season in trying to implement his style.
If you accept this theory, would it be enough to justify Wigan's consistent rollercoaster rides?
@ayvee: I agree with everything you said, but I still can't help but think there must be some markers that can be used to make some sort of projection.
Martinez has found a consistent winning formula now with his new formation, it's basically Bielsa's that he used at Chile, no surprise considering Beausejour is on Wigan's team.
