Re: Chat Thread
I just read an amazing beasting on Facebook. It's too long to post, but basically someone posted a picture of Obama and a fake story about a professor who did an experiment to show his students that socialism doesn't work. One person beasted this clearly clueless Republican about the difference between Socialism and Communism. And also about Europe v USA.

Re: Chat Thread
An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.
The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).
After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.
The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.
To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. It could not be any simpler than that. Remember, there IS a test coming up. The 2012 elections.
These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.
--------------
1. That professor sounds like a prick
2. how is showing a class how economics truly work being a prick. If people don't see in real life lessons how are they going to learn?
1. 1) This story is false 2) this fake professor doesn't understand the difference between socialism and communism. Go to the European socialist countries and you won't see a doctor making the same amount of money as someone working at a McDonald's and you won't see someone quit their job in investment banking because they could make the same salary as a janitor
2. Ok, have those European countries ever been called the greatest country in the world, or a world power, or leader in economics? Socialism does not work in letting people thrive from the hard work they do and if they dont work they dont have money sounds fair to me.( also the non working people does not include disabled or unable or work people)
1. The point of that statement was to show that socialism does not lead to a collected society...and as far as their standing in the world they have much smaller income equality gaps than the US, swiss banks are healthier than US banks for the most part (this is also true of other European banks) , their students are smarter, and their people are happier...and as far as hard work and getting paid...its not exactly more difficult to make a fortune in Europe than it is in the US... Europe doesn't have a lack of multi millionaires
2. A basic flat tax system in the US would fix many of the problems. Also if their people are smarter, and happier why do so many come to the US. What studies show that they are smarter and happier. Also swiss banks arnt exactly the peak of excellence they have helped Americans with tax evasion for many many years, yea that exactly how i would like to see a bank operating. Their multi millionaires are few and farther between
1. A flat tax system is not equitable: That's proven by the concept of diminishing marginal utility..and also those with more money use government services to a greater extent and should therefore pay more: ie I'm sure I fly a lot more than people with incomes below mine: therefore I should pay for more for the government regulation that makes it safe to fly: I drive more than someone with an income below mine: therefore I should pay more for roads, traffic lights, and maintenance than someone who doesn't use it as much. I invest more than someone who has a lower income for me, so I should pay more for the government regulation that makes sure that my investments are safe...If a multimillion dollar house catches on fire, it takes more resources for the tax funded fire department to do its job....Also in 2009 the EU had a higher GDP than the US ( due to the US's size I think this is a fair comparison to make instead of comparing one country) And as far as the studies go: (Forbes ranks the US 14th happiest country The top 5 are all European --it's the last link) http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2010-12-07-us-students-international-ranking_N.htm http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/dec/07/world-education-rankings-maths-science-reading http://centerforgloballeadership.wordpress.com/2010/12/08/us-tanks-in-global-education-rankings/, http://www.forbes.com/2010/07/14/world-happiest-countries-lifestyle-realestate-gallup-table.html
2. So if im a bigger person than someone else should i also have to pay a higher tax for clothes since i take more fabric. And just comparing land mass to land mass is unfair in a GDP. how many EU countries have had and held a higher GDP than the US for several years. Also they have much much higher gas prices around $8-$10 a gallon. would u rather be there and paying that.
1. Fabric isn't a paid for by taxes, but if you want to use that argument then sure...if you require more fabric than obviously you will pay more for it...and it's not just comparing land mass..it's comparing population. Obviously due to it's size and population...the US will have more output and productivity than one small European country...But if size is really an issue you can compare a US state with a European country and it's obvious who would have a higher GDP..Europe has higher gas prices because they acutally have efficient public transportation, so the supply of gas is smaller in Europe you won't see nearly as many gas stations in Europe as you do in the US ergo higher gas prices..anyways I'm not saying socialism is perfect..that's not my argument...The point is that 1) Socialism isn't communism 2) Socialism wouldn't lead to everyone making the same income as this false story alleges...anywho I could go on for days, but this is becoming very time consuming...nice chatting with you

No, that's the oval shape.
It's spelled ellipsis.

Re: Chat Thread
I've always wondered what the difference of discretionary income is between Americans and Europeans.
Because you always hear people complain about the taxes over in Europe, but those end up paying for things like health care (which you will end up paying for out of pocket in the US anyways).

Oops, I was thinking of the plural. I believe ellipses is the plural for both.

No. If you haven't noticed by now, when the Americans take over the Chat Thread, discussions usually turns serious and philosophical.

I agree. The conversations I have with my fellow US inhabitants are generally very serious conversations indeed.

Anderson Cooper-esque.
Brilliant banner from Schalke fans today after they heard how much the tickets at San Mames would cost in the second leg.
“A €90 ticket = 1 euro per minute? Football is not telephone sex!”

I read that somewhere earlier today, I can't remember where though.
EDIT: Oh yeah, someone mentioned it in the Europa League thread.

Should have known.
Neymar passed Robinho today in the Santos goalscoring records. I wonder how far he'll get up the list before he leaves.
