Question for non-Liverpool fans. Empty Question for non-Liverpool fans.

Post by Guest Sat Mar 24, 2012 12:48 am

Liverpool fans can answer too of course, but this is more aimed at the non-Liverpool fans.

    Scenario

Your team has gone 6-7 years without a Trophy, and only one good Cup run. ('07 Champions League Final).

In that time, they've only been in the title race once, and have been fighting for 4th place every other season, and usually failing to do so.

This season, they win the Carling Cup, and the FA Cup, yet finish 6th-8th in the League.

    What are your end-of-season thoughts?

Sack the manager? Give him one more year? Keep him?

Please ignore the fact that it's Liverpool's scenario, and picture it happening with YOUR team. What would you be thinking?

If it was my team, I'd give the manager 1 more year. But that's because I know I have a talented squad of homegrown players, and the manager didn't buy a bunch of poo. But that's not the case for Liverpool. I'd sack him.

I'd say, the next thing to look at is the defensive system, and then the football being played. By winning 2 trophies, you have shown some resolve, but finishing low in the league shows more than a cup win IMO

Look at Birmingham, they took the league cup and also got relegated (granted the cup was gifted to them). In their case the manager were replaced.

With respect to Liverpool, Kenny has to leave. His ridiculously poor work in the transfer windows has been shown to be exactly that. The players he overpaid for, are now much lower in value, and not even a consideration for any big clubs who would be able to pay similar prices, which rules out Liverpool getting any resale value out of these players, because they do, have to leave.

Then again, when you concede late goals, it's rarely the manager's fault (I feel), of course there are exceptions (Arsenal vs Manchester United, 2012)

Kenny has to hit the road

A finish below top 2 would be unacceptable, beheading of the manager is the only option.

You can't just say what if this scenario happened to your club. It differs from club to club and there is more to than just winning trophies.

I don't understand this... are we completely disregarding everything else the manager and club has done over the last 7 years and simplifying it down to cup runs and league runs?

It depends on whether said manager sells an established Portuguese international with good footballing pedigree and one of the lowest salaries at the club who won the PFA fans's player of the season, and replaces him by signing a young, unproven, terrible English midfielder for twice the cost.

The FA cup only holds merit, the carling cup is shit and tbh if a manager see's talent in Henderson, Downing and Adam then he's lost. So I'd sack him

If they win the FA Cup definitely keep him. It's the second best domestic trophy.

These days getting into the top 4 is the second best achievement to winning the league though

Funny, this scenario is what is happening to my club at the moment.

And we've consequently are on our 3rd manager of the season. Neutral

But there are differences, my team won the league last season and was expected to hold it and challenge in Europe and further strengthen the squad. We've done the opposite.

Fail to qualify for the Champions League after spending 100 million plus pounds then the manager needs to be fired, no doubt about it. Winning the FA Cup and the Carling Cup doesn't mean much except for the fact that it ensures qualification for the Europa League, which should be be taken for granted anyway considering the obscene amounts of money spent on players. Dalglish has definitely failed, although Liverpool, as a club, have made slight progress.

ITT don't talk about Liverpool but imagine you're a Liverpool supporter lmao.

If I was John W Henry i'd be steaming. Gave Kenny loads of money to spend with the main objective getting Liverpool back into the Champions League. Now when Kenny and Comolli come running to him this summer asking for investment, he will be pointing at Stuart Downing, Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson.. £70m+ of investment and where did that get him? Fucking wasted his money on shit.

Enrique and Bellamy weren't bad either.

The rest were shambolic at best.
