Religion was an educational aid, nothing else. It is a 'theory' penned to explain our existence. In my opinion, nobody should preach creationism (for example) as fact, because there is no evidence to suggest.
Science would have progressed without religion, at a much better pace. We wouldn't have had the scientific repression in the dark ages for a start. You didn't need a belief in God to ask why? Some of the greatest minds in history didn't believe in God. The greatest philosopher in history, Socrates, didn't believe in a God.
