Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has reiterated his desire to see the January transfer window scrapped and insists he will not be tempted to bring in any new signings this month.
Wenger had initially suggested he would be forced to dip into the market to provide defensive cover following an injury to Thomas Vermaelen, but despite losing Francis Coquelin to a growing injury list, Wenger believes he would not be able to find suitable cover.
The Gunners boss believes players looking to move in January will not be ready to step straight into the first team because they have either not been playing regularly at their current clubs, or have little Premier League experience.
"You find players who have not been playing at their clubs, so decide they will leave in January," Wenger said. "They are already less committed to the cause.
"We have gone from a period when even if you didn't play, you had to be committed to your club and had no other option than to fight. Now you have a quick and easy way out. I would either leave the window open, or close it completely. This is just in between when everyone gets nervous around November.
"Sometimes, if a player hasn't played, by the time they are fit, you have your own injured players back. Or you find a young player somewhere who can take three or four months to adjust to the Premier League. If we can get Thomas Vermaelen back next week, we have enough players available."

I'm surprised Arsene Wenger is still at Arsenal. They should have sacked him a couple years ago. I wonder what would happen if they fail to qualify for the CL.

There wasn't a need to sack him 2 years ago because his project still had some potential, it failed after last season for sure.
If he isn't going to buy now at one of the most important times for the club (On top of that to make up for the shitty summer we had) then he needs to go and stop dragging the club down.

He just wants to not buy anyone in January without being criticised.

My jaw is on the floor I'm that shocked. Wenger not buying quality players that improve the squad, when has that happened before?

A lot of over-reaction. I'm just as unhappy as any of you, but some of you are just talking out of impulse. Maybe tomorrow we can be a bit more rational. As for the original article, the window is a nuisance and it surely can't help anyone when it's randomly thrown in the middle of the season. I agree that it should be left open or closed until the summer.

Well you could argue had we not of signed Arshavin in 2009 then we mightn't have got a much needed boost and got 4th. I think it's good but can be disruptive as well.BladeGunner wrote:A lot of over-reaction. I'm just as unhappy as any of you, but some of you are just talking out of impulse. It is disruptive regardless. The fact that some good can come out of it is irrelevant. I'd rather it was just open throughout the entire season.

That would be pretty awesome in fairness but I don't think it would work well with the likes of Man City (not so much now) and Madrid splashing lots on several players.BladeGunner wrote:jonnyc23 wrote:Well you could argue had we not of signed Arshavin in 2009 then we mightn't have got a much needed boost and got 4th. It would be pretty shit if it was open all season because Man City would just pay teams a few million to emergency loan their best players when they have a tough game.BladeGunner wrote:jonnyc23 wrote:Well you could argue had we not of signed Arshavin in 2009 then we mightn't have got a much needed boost and got 4th. Wenger will never be sacked.. he's the scapegoat for so many things.
Arsenal's mindset is no longer to be a power club in England.. it was when opportunities and players fell into place, but it will always come second to any possible financial gain. We just don't go for it, like other clubs who want the success and dominance do. It's a shame.
