If I hadn't lost to kilmarnock and dundee (no idea how I did that). I would have been top of the league.

How do you guys deal with keeping a back up keeper? I can never seem to get anyone decent who is happy to play back up, they all want to leave after half a year.

Let them play carling cup fixtures and "eaiser" league fixtures. Mostly though I tend to change my backup keeper every 3 years or so.

Re: The Football Manager Chat Thread!
I beat Villa 2-0, they sacked Martin Jol and have just offered me a job. Tempted to take it, but I don't want to abandon my Swans mid-season. Plus I think this Swansea side is better than Villa's, even though they've probably got the cash and supporters.
Advice?

So badly want a save like Jordi's where he has regens and stuff, but with colchester instead of Southampton.
Any tips on getting promoted from League One in the first season?

My tip would be pick Huddersfield. No idea what Colchesters budget's like but I'd suggest going for loans and free transfers in positions you feel weak.Adz wrote:So badly want a save like Jordi's where he has regens and stuff, but with colchester instead of Southampton.

Sheffield United are the best team in L1.
For Colchester, look around the free agents, there's tons of good ones. (Materazzi, Pavon, etc) and Premier League club (especially Arsenal) reserve teams, you should be able to pick yourself up and go up, then establish yourself in the Championship.

Adam Johnson is an absolute god in this game. 9 goals and 6 assists in 19 appearances on the wing. Funny because the fans were pissed off when I signed him, thought he was a waste of money.

Re: The Football Manager Chat Thread!
Would you consider it cheating if I made Colchester have a sugar daddy, Have a ton of money to spend and alter all the Youth and Trainings to 20?

I used to abuse that cheat so much. It's your game, you do what you want.Adz wrote:Would you consider it cheating if I made Colchester have a sugar daddy, Have a ton of money to spend and alter all the Youth and Trainings to 20?

Also, if you get promoted it will feel better than having used a cheat to help.Adz wrote:jonnyc23 wrote:I used to abuse that cheat so much. It's your game, you do what you want.

No, it's just deciding to play the game that way. Cheating is saving before every game and reloading if you lose or editing mid game.
I did what you did with Bury in the last one, it was quite fun.

REPLY TO ZZONKED FROM CHAT THREAD
Sorry for slow reply.
I tend to line up like this
--------------------Gk
-----------CB(X)---CB(C)----CB(X)
----WB-----------------------------WB
---------------CM-------CM
----W-----------------------------W
-----------------ST
For my midfield 2, it depends who is playing their for the roles, it also depends on the opposition. If it is a straight 4-4-2 i'm against, i'll usually just match them, but if the opponents are significantly stronger i'll possibly play 1 at DM and 1 at CM or even 1 at DM 1 at AM if I think I can exploit the space behind the 2.
Winger roles I change depending on the players i'm using, I never have the same on both sides though, I just don't like it. For the CB's, I have 2 stoppers who I ask to specifically man mark their 2 strikers, 1 each with my 3rd CB covering like a sweeper. It's up to you if you want tight marking or not for the centre backs, I only do tight if my CB's are significantly better than the opposing strikers, tight marking Rooney isn't great with bad defenders because he'll easily turn him.
Playing like this took me to 4th place with R Sociedad (predicted 16th) I did alternate with 4-2-3-1 when playing 1 striker formations though too.
It's helpful playing with a CB that can play CDM comfortably as well or vice versa. The worst thing that can happen is you're dominating and they change to a 3 man/1 man attack and you have too many defenders. If that happens I usually move one of my centre backs straight into a defensive midfielder.

Cheers for the in-depth post. I'm gonna start training a tactic like that now, I'll tell you how it goes.
One question, what philosophy do you use (e.g. fluid)?

Yeah. Quick tempo football too (not necessarily long ball) because not so many bodies in the middle to play slow possession football.

No. I have 3 tactics and I tweak the positions of them depending on opposition formation and players.
