    I don't think there's any question of that - he's been perfectly happy to be a backup at United for years, and given how injury prone the twins are known to be, our state in midfield with Carrick as the only defensive midfielder, I can't imagine he'd have wanted to leave. Keeping him, as I advocated, would have been a fantastic way to avoid situations like Basel and Wigan.

    I imagine he either wanted to go, or we had to reduce the wage bill.
