Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a motorway smash on Sunday morning.
Bannan, 21, was unhurt after crashing his Range Rover into the central reservation of the M1 at 5:30am, but was breathalysed and then held for nine hours at Nottingham's Bridewell police station.
James Collins, 20, a striker with League Two Shrewsbury Town, was also arrested.
Police were forced to close parts of the motorway because of the smash.
A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said: 'A Range Rover collided with the central reservation near junction 26 at around 5.30am. No other vehicles were involved.
'Two men aged 20 and 21 were arrested in Bulwell on suspicion of drink-driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
'Both have been bailed pending further enquiries.'
Bannan has won nine caps for Scotland and played for Villa in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at home to West Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion.
A source living in Bulwell, a Nottinghamshire town, told the Sun: 'The police picked them up as they were walking down the road.
'They breathalysed both men, Bannan and his friend, before they got into the back of the police cars.
'We were told they'd been arrested in connection with an accident on the M1.'
