Copa Roca 2011 Empty Copa Roca 2011

Post by Guest Sat Sep 10, 2011 5:05 am

One upon a time in the faraway land of Argentina there was a guy called General Julio Roca who - in addition to killing lots of Native South Americans - served as president of Argentina, and as an Ambassador to Brazil. Upon his death in 1914 a special tournament between Brazil and Argentina was named after him. It was called the Copa Roca. From that year until 1976, the encounter was contested intermittently until it ceased to be important (I guess that was the reason anyway). The competition sank into oblivion for 35 years.

Then earlier this year Nicolas Leos and his cronies at COMNEBOL decided to bring it back. The 1st leg is September 14th in Argentina and the 2nd leg is September 28th in Brazil. Only players of either nationality playing in that country's national league are allowed to participate.

    The Squads:

    Brazil

Goalkeepers: Fábio (Cruzeiro), Rafael (Santos), Jefferson (Botafogo)

Wingbacks: Danilo (Santos), Mario Fernandes (Grêmio), Bruno Cortês (Botafogo),
    Kleber (Internacional)

Centrebacks: Dedé (Vasco), Réver (Atlético-MG), Rhodolfo (São Paulo), Henrique (Palmeiras)

Defensive midfielders: Casemiro (São Paulo), Paulinho (Corinthians), Ralf (Corinthians), Rômulo (Vasco)

Creative midfielders: Cícero (São Paulo), Lucas (São Paulo), Oscar (Internacional), Renato Abreu (Flamengo), Thiago Neves (Flamengo)

Forwards: Fred (Fluminense), Leandro Damião (Internacional), Neymar (Santos), Ronaldinho Gaúcho (Flamengo)

    Argentina

    Goalkeepers
    Marcelo Barovero (Vélez Sarsfield)
    Agustín Orión (Boca Juniors)

    Defenders
    Sebastián Domínguez (Vélez)
    Emiliano Papa (Vélez)
Christian Cellay (Estudiantes de La Plata)
    Leandro Desábato (Estudiantes)
Jonathan Bottinelli (San Lorenzo de Almagro)
    Iván Pillud (Racing Club)
    Clemente Rodríguez (Boca)
    Lisandro López (Arsenal Fútbol Club)

    Midfielders
    Augusto Fernández (Vélez)
    Héctor Canteros (Vélez)
    Rodrigo Braña (Estudiantes)
    Juan Sebastián Verón (Estudiantes)
    Lucas Castro (Racing)
    Agustín Pelletieri (Racing)
    Juan Román Riquelme (Boca)
    Christian Chávez (Boca)
    Diego Valeri (Lanús)

    Forwards
    Juan Manuel Martínez (Vélez)
    Gastón Fernández (Estudiantes)
    Mauro Boselli (Estudiantes)
    Gabriel Hauche (Racing)
    Emmanuel Gigliotti (San Lorenzo)

    Should be good.

Sounds good. I like the idea of the players having to be playing in the nation's league.

If it was England, it would still be the same squad. Neutral

The games is very choppy. Ronaldinho is class but the rest can't seem to control a ball.

0x0. ARG were the better team overall. 2nd leg is in 2 weeks in Belem.

That play from Damião surely is one of the greatest lost goals ever.

The Wealth is more evenly spread in the Brazilian team, 11 different clubs represented while the Argies have 7 different clubs represented.

From what I heard Sabella purposely picked a lot of Velez players because he knows that well (he's an ex-Velez coach) and he wanted that strain of chemistry in the team. It worked.

Mano Menezes has once again selected a domestic squad for the second leg of the Copa Roca in Belem against Argentina. Borges receives his first call-up to the Selecao after an impressive season for Santos while Elkeson, Emerson, and Diego Souza join him in the squad.

Leandro Damiao misses out due to an injury picked up last night whilst playing for Internacional against Figueirense in a 1-1 draw.

    Brazil squad to face Argentina

    Borges - Santos

    Bruno Cortês - Botafogo

    Casemiro - São Paulo

    Danilo - Santos

    Dedé - Vasco

    Diego Souza - Vasco

    Elkeson - Botafogo

    Emerson - Coritiba

    Fred - Fluminense

    Jefferson - Botafogo

    Kleber - Internacional

    Lucas - São Paulo

    Mario Fernandes - Grêmio

    Neymar - Santos

    Oscar - Internacional

    Paulinho - Corinthians

    Rafael - Santos

    Ralf - Corinthians

    Réver - Atlético Mineiro

    Rhodolfo - São Paulo

    Rômulo - Vasco

    Ronaldinho Gaúcho - Flamengo

Borges, Elkeson. not worthy Damiao is injured. Sad

Now that is the a team. I will interested to see how Romulo plays. Heard a lot of good things about him, but I haven't seen him play yet. Borges to sink little Argentina. afro
