Champions Manchester United begin the defence of their crown with a tough trip to West Bromwich Albion.

New signing Shane Long is poised to make his West Brom debut in the match.

But Long's forward partner Peter Odemwingie is struggling to overcome the ankle injury suffered in the pre-season friendly at Bristol City a fortnight ago.

Right-back Steven Reid (calf) and Youssouf Mulumbu (abdominal strain) are available after injury but summer signing, defender Gareth McAuley, is ruled out through illness.

Patrice Evra is a major doubt for Manchester United's opening Barclays Premier League match at West Brom on Sunday.

The full-back was forced out of last week's Community Shield win over Manchester City with a knee injury and was not fit enough to play in France's midweek friendly with Chile.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Evra is still struggling, so either Fabio or Jonny Evans will likely step in. Darren Fletcher (virus) and Antonio Valencia are pencilled in for reserve-team appearances on Monday, while Javier Hernandez (concussion) is sidelined for another fortnight.

Think West Brom have a chance here, especially with Man U only having half of a first choice defence and a keeper that didn't look convincing last weekend.

Give De Gea a chance to settle in and find his feet, remember he's still young.

This will be a really tough game if last season's away form is anything to go by, my head says 1-1 but my heart says 2-0 to us.

To be honest the way Evra has been playing I don't think Fabio coming in for him will make that much of a difference, because Fabio is good but gives away silly fouls, but Pat has been doing that for a while any way, Smalling was IMMENSE at RB v City and has been before, I'm confident with him there, will be a tough one and West Brom do stand a chance, but I don't think our back four will be that much weaker.

I was confused when we played Smalling at right-back for the first time last season..but once again he impressed me and did his job well there. I think our defence is sorted out.

United will win but I can see WBA scoring at least 1 goal. Brunt or Odemwingie.
