I don't think there's ever been as much competition for United as there is now, or will be soon.

Ferguson has hardly ever had a serious rival.

Through the 90's who was there? Just clubs having their 15 mins of fame, like Blackburn who played Ferguson at his own game and beat him but couldn't keep up with that sort of spending.

Then Arsenal pushed up to Fergusons level just with a great team. But then Wenger went off the boil as players left, now they're also rans.

Chelsea came in with REAL money and what happened? Man U's dominance was broken. But Abramovich got in the way.

NOW, You have City spending ridiculous money. Then there's Chelsea who could be looking to settle with Villas Boas and starting to spend big again.

I think things are about to change. It's a shame it's came so late though because I think if I'm starting to be proved right Fergie will pussy out and retire with people calling him the best ever, when really he was the best of shite competition.

are you just trolling or sumat? you say he had shite competition.. cumon!!!! liverpool, leeds, blackburn, newcastle, arsenal, chelsea and now city. Fergie has beaten them over and over again. You may hate united and fergie himself but you've got to respect what he's done.

It's just my opinion. No club has been able to compete with Ferguson financially, but when they have they've generally won.

I do respect him for doing it though. It's like Usain Bolt. It's not surprising when he wins because he's blessed with a body that's faster than everyone elses, but I still respect him for winning those races.

We have challenged all of 4 times in the last 20 years, Leeds didn't get close, Blackburn challenged twice.

Misleading because Man U's spending has come down in recent years. (With the prices of players going up)

I'd like to see the stats up to 2000-2005. Bet that's a different picture.

Even if the spending has come down in recent years, the trophy haul has not. So clearly, it's not all about spending with Fergie. He also deserves a ton of credit for his ability to spot young talent. He hasn't always gotten it right, but who has? Overall, the Fledglings have been the cornerstone of his success. And as fergiesbigrednose points out, those players cost fuck all.

If Fergie's fledglings were so good why did he have to spend so much money?

What were they then? Shit? They were only 6 guys. I'm just saying it wasn't all about spending. It was a combination of internal development, procurement of developed talent and having the ability to make the chemistry work. The Fledglings were the cornerstone but supplementation was still a necessary as needs arose. He was brilliant at spotting what was needed but the success he had wouldn't have been possible without the foundation and the consistency he was able to establish thanks to that young class of players that he seemingly pulled out of his ass.

They played a part, you're exaggerating a bit. He was still consistently one of the highest spenders.

We have no money, not a penny to spend on transfers. He would have to use his contacts to get some loan players in.

So based on just management skills, no. But nobody would Sad

And bar the defence, our team is shit. We've lost our three best players this summer, all for free (bar a little compensation for Gunnarsson) Neutral

The fact that he was just one of the biggest spenders shows that there's more to it than just spending. He was "one of" the biggest spenders and still won more titles than everybody else. And as you have pointed out, spending has gone down since 2005 and he has still won more titles than everybody else in England combined during that time.

I thought you'd pick up on that. I just didn't know how to put it. I mean in the years leading up to around 2005 I think the majority of the time he was the highest spender. In recent years it's come down because he didn't have to spend, the players from his last spree were still good enough. But they're going now, and already I think he's the highest spender half way through July and reports say it's not going to stop.

Like Chelsea and Manchester City you mean?

Chelsea broke Man U's dominance when they vastly outspent Fergie. City are still getting their act together, once the dust has settled they'll overtake Ferguson's United.

    like chelsea did????

    Sleep

put jose in charge of coventry and he wont get them promoted either. this is officially the most retarded thread ever, you can only manage whats infront of you, fergie has survived at the top longer then anyone and thats as big an achievement as 3 promotions in a row because many have failed to do what fergie has done which is consistently winning and never been sacked.

He's not a magician. It would be difficult to acheive instant success at his first attempt and to install a winning mentality in a club that has struggled in recent seasons, and it would be especially difficult with the current Coventry squad. In fact i believe Fergie struggled in his first few years at United and almost got sacked.

Maybe if he was there for 2 or 3 years i think he could get them promoted but not in his first season.

What happened to Coventry? They were in the Premier League about 10 years ago, don't think they've ever challenged to return. Lack of investment?
