Can't, our debt is in the form of bonds which are paid back in 2017. Of course we can buy up bonds, but they won't necessarily be at a fair rate.
They technically could pay off the bonds early, but the early payment fees are probably too ridiculous to make it worth while. As you say, the other way is to buy back the bonds, which they actually did do to some extent last year. The only question is where did the money come from. It clearly did not come from club revenue. The only plausible theory is that it came from loans taken out by the American holding company that owns the two companies that own Manchester United plc (
). And if that is indeed the case, then Man Utd fans should be thrilled that the Glazers are attempting to move the debt and the securities related to it further away from the club. The debt that everyone talks about isn't actually Manchester United's: it's Red Football Limited's. However, Manchester United's assets (including the naming rights of Old Trafford) are effectively mortgaged to the bond holders. So as Red Football Limited buys down its debts, it leaves Manchester United less exposed. If the Glazers are buying down that debt by using the credit of companies higher up the ownership chain, that is a good sign for Manchester United.

What they did last year was to pay off the Payment in Kinds loans that everyone had been worrying about. As I understand it, Red Football Ltd. and Manchester United are now debt free with the exception of the bonds.

Oh yea, that's right. I forgot it was the PIKs they paid off. Still, it's a good sign. This clearly isn't going to go the same way Liverpool went.
