Well for one the winger situation is fine at United, plus you have Rooney to play in the hole, so I dont see where he is needed.
Then lets consider the most gaping hole in the United team the center of midfield, The likes Of Banega, Javi Martinez, those kind of deep lying playmakers could all do a great job for United for that money if not a little more

You have to judge deals in the context of the wider market. Obviously comparing two transfers in isolation doesn't give you a very accurate view.

I wasn't saying it was a good deal, was just saying in terms of the money spent on English players it was a decent price. I don't rate Young that highly, Downing won player of the year ahead of him last year at Villa, so he's not even the best winger there.
That said, I can see him doing a Valencia under Fergie, so it could work out.
