This question popped into my head while reading some recent Messi/Ronaldo responses. People say if Messi lifts a world cup in his career he will be the best ever in all probability. Well take this scenario. Messi and Ronaldo continue to have their similar scoring records for a few years but at the next world cup Ronaldo leads Portugal to victory. Does this mean Ronaldo would go down as a better player than Messi, despite Messi having the edge over Ronaldo on club level?

Not enough information. The World Cup is a big piece, but it's not the end-all, be-all. Plus, we'd have to see how they won it. If they won it with Ronaldo carrying them single-handedly, then that would be a strong argument for yes.

If they are close in every other regard (i.e. club trophies, career goals, individual awards, etc.) then I would say that that would definitely push Ronaldo over the top.
Thank God it's never gonna happen

most likely not, but then again you never know, would make for an interesting scenario

I think winning the World Cup is of importance. It is obviously the biggest stage of all.
If both have similar seasons/performances/goals etc, yes, to me, it'll put CR7 over the top.
Many respect players like Cantona/Di Stefano/Best...but winning the World Cup is the ultimate goal/dream for every player.

Yes, theres not much between cristiano and messi, and winning the world cup is a huge factor to determkne who's done the best.
This is why I always rank Ronaldo as the greatest striker that ever lived, because of his world cup records.

No, Messi is proving right now he's the better player.. because even now Madrid play better football without Ronaldo, he's not much of a team player but he's amazing so it's okay.
Messi is AMAZING and works with his team very well, and makes everything happen.
So no, if Ronaldo won the World Cup and Messi didn't, Messi would still be better imo.

Re: If Portugal won the world cup...
the gaps so far apart that I honestly get mad when people genuinely have to ask, it seems like almost everyone who says ronaldo is better is a madrid/united fan, People who are bias towards EPL, or idiots that never watch football. I can think of lots of people that have said messi is the best, I cant think of anyone involved in football that said ronaldo is the best. Winning one accolade doesnt chance the fact that one is miles above the other.

Re: If Portugal won the world cup...
It all depends on the impact he makes. Look at Torres, he won the World Cup and flopped massively at the same time.

Easier fixtures, great tactician as manager, good form and a little luck could see Portugal in the final easily I'd say.NZG wrote:Yes

At the end of the day, it is still 11 men on the pitch at each side.

Re: If Portugal won the world cup...
Too hypothetical for me.
Messi could slow down to normal levels (40 goals/year) Ronaldo could keep his level (40 goals/year)and they could split titles (totally feasiable ) if Ronaldo gets a World Cup, how would history view them? Who knows, I'm not even going to try.

Of course not. Cruyff and Platini never won World Cups, but they are still up with the all time best.
