Portugal climb fourth as African quartet fly 1681087_FULL-LND

The results of 54 ‘A’ internationals, all of which were friendlies distributed over all six confederations, were taken into account for the latest edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.

While the top ten has seen only one change, with Portugal (4th, up 1) swapping places with Uruguay (5th, down 1), there has been a lot more activity in the remainder of the top 20, where Switzerland (20th, up 3) have extended Europe’s predominance as the 14th UEFA team, Mexico (21st, down 3) have fallen below 20th for the first time since March 2012, and Ecuador (17th, up 3) have become one of the top 20 teams in their continued climb from the previous month by moving up a further three places.

The major movers in the top 50 include European sides Slovenia (24th, up 9), Belgium (40th, up 13), and Austria (49th, up 11), whose 2-0 win at home to Turkey has seen them back in the top 50 after one and a half years.

Belgium have brought their three-and-a-half-month stretch out of the top 50 to an end with a 4-2 victory over neighbouring Netherlands, extending the Red Devils’ unbeaten run at home to nine, while Slovenia secured their first victory over Romania in six years, winning 4-3.

No fewer than four African teams have achieved their highest-ever FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking position: Mali (32nd, up 7), Libya (36th, up 2), Central African Republic (64th, up 7) and South Sudan (197th, up 2).

This always happens to Mexico, they lose or tie to some mediocre team and shoot down a few places, then they have a friendly with Brazil, win and they shoot right back. Laughing

Big rise for Belgium. They were ranked 66 only two years ago and it's not inconceivable that they will shoot into the top 20 within the next year or two.

You just need to look at some of their players right now. Hazard, Kompany, Vermaelen, Lukaku, Witsel, Fellaini, Vertonghen, Mirallas. That's a strong team.

Well since UEFA is the best confederation a team like Northern Ireland does not win many games and thus does not accumulate a lot of ranking points. Games against American Samoa, Cook Islands, Samoa, etc. are free points for New Caledonia. I also know Turkmenistan just recently finished 2nd in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup.

Nice to see Tahiti shoot up 17 places after their OFC Nations cup win.

New Caledonia were runners up in this competition, so I guess thats why they are above NI, although I don't agree with this.

Northern Ireland only games recently have been friendlies which is probably why they are falling. Niger had the African Cup of Nations, Turkmenistan had the AFC Challenge Cup, and New Caledonia had the OFC Nations Cup.

Euro 2008 (or lack thereof) never happened so England looks pretty good with two quarterfinal births and dominant qualification campaigns. shifty

Yea, they are rightly third based on how the rankings work. The rankings are a point-based system, thus, aren't subject to human subjectivity. A computer pumps out the rankings. So yea, they got the ranking that they earned. What I'm saying is that the ranking system does not accurately depict who is better than whom in many cases. Do you honestly believe that England is better than Brazil or Italy? They just got beat by Italy. They forced a shootout but they were decidedly outplayed.

A 5-0 thrashing of Moldova should not be taken lightly. Italy only beat them 2-1 last time they played, whereas Brazil, Argentina and Spain have fortunately avoided such a tough contest.

It shouldn't be taken as evidence that England is one of the two or three best teams in the world either. It was a nice win. That's all.
