If Roy Hodgson is a "hoof-ball" manager like alot of use say, then how come the media don't slag him off for using that approach whilst Big Sam for example always gets tagged as a long ball merchant all the time? It just doesn't make sense.

Because the media aren't very clever.

I hear that. The media make him out to be the only manager (maybe Tony Pulis also) who uses a more direct approach, whilst their are others like Boothroyd, Megson and even Hodgson who also use this tactic. But i wouldn't have included Roy in that list personally.

Roy does do the hoof, but not as extreme as others. but he is more defense-minded than any of them. you know the rule, opponents have the ball, all players retreat into own half and then start pressing. But his press-conferences are the worst of the lot, "yeah port vale are a very good side, we're going to have to be incredibly good to take them on, even at home. and don't question me, my hoof tactics haven't failed me in my 36 years of management."

Fair enough, that's probably why I wouldn't have thought of his as a "direct" manager (I hate using the term hoof-ball). And his defensive approach would explain why his away record during his time in England is very poor. But you have to give him credit for his time at Fulham. His time at Liverpool didn't work out, and it'll be interesting to see how he does at West Brom. As for his press conferences, i think he is trying to give his opponents respect and to make sure his players don't take them lightly.

didn't appear that way to all of our fans, and I doubt the players took it the right way. didn't work against northampton, blackpool, wolves etc. small club man, small club mentality. so he will do better at WBA.
