To evaluate whether the transfer fee paid for a player is "worth it". In American sports people usually re-evaluate drafts and new signings after 3 years. How long does it take in football? Everyone thought Arshavin was a bargain after his first six months in England, now it seems as though he was adequately priced, Ferdiand for 30 million in 2002 must've been looked at overpriced, but looking back he's been amongst the best CBs over the past few years.

American sports are different. The draft system means that it's all about wages when in football it's transfer fees and huge wages too.
I'd say it takes at least 3 years of solid performances which match up to how much you were bought for/are being paid to show whether or not it was worth it.
That said.....even Berbatov with his amazing season is struggling to convince everyone. Tbh I was convinced even before this season.....though that was that I thought he's quality...but £30m is still a lot. Would need to carry on this form for at least another year.

Most football fans LOVE a good knee jerk reaction, so I'd say it takes about 1-2 games to fully evaluate how good a player is.

Weirdly with every player Arsenal sign I'm always confident of the transfer being 'worth it'. Van Persie for £2m when Suarez goes for £22m, Nasri for £12m, Adam to Liverpool for £14m and even Walcott for £12m was an absolute bargain if James Milner is worth £24m.
