In 2010, Spanish superstar Xavi revealed that Le Tissier had been one of his childhood inspirations, claiming that: "His talent was simply out of the norm. He could simply dribble past seven or eight players but without speed - he just walked past them. For me he was sensational"
That true?

That's quite high praise I guess

I reckon if Le Tissier was Brazilian or Spanish people would ejaculate.
I ejaculate already.

Also Freddy Adu was hailed as the next big thing when he was like 15, and now he's just faded away.

Grønkjær comes to mind here. Daniel Agger too.
Wasn't Le Tissier's "problem" that he was way too loyal to come to a really big club?

Yeah. Think he's admitted it himself if he wasn't so loyal to Southampton he'd have become much more of a player.Thuda wrote:Grønkjær comes to mind here. Daniel Agger too.

Doesn't explain why he didn't play for england much

Álex Aguinaga, seriously, Milan tried to sign him in 89', but Necaxa had already signed him for about 200k. With Necaxa he was undoubtedly the best player in Mexico in the 90's, and lead them to three championships. He never triumphed with Ecuador because he didn't have an overly decent team around him to help. He was simply phenomenal.

Joe Cole - was great for West Ham and in his early days for Chelsea, has seemingly gone downhill recently though
Lee Miller - never seen him play but looking at his CV on wikipedia it doesn't look as if he's achieved too much
Aidan McGeady - great dribbler, no end product though
Ashley Young - one of the most overrated players in the prem, diving shithouse as well

in joe cole early day he was being compare to gascoigne. in a england under 19 match he score 9 goals against spain just dribble past everyone basically
he was really skilful like a english denilson
but when he going to chelsea mourinho told him stop making skill
i think it made him better overall player, but not skillful like he use to. he surely could of been one of best player of all time perhaps if he move at early age to league that appreciate his skill
but he was very immature player anyway in term of his end product. he is much more mature these day,his crossing and pass is perfect but his skill is nothing like old day

And the fact Glenn Hoddle hated him with a passion.
We could have won the World Cup in '98, if we had taken either Le Tiss, or Gazza.

May be tempted to say Veron. Ok, he didnt have a good time in England, but he had his moments at United, enough to show he is a quality player- which he's proved back home in Argentina, and even in his mod 30s looked pretty good in the WC.

Is this thread about players that people underappreciated (underrated) or players that never reached their true potential (overhyped, for example)?

Not sure, but I think both.
The two players I mentioned (Grønkjær and Agger) are both in the last category (weren't overhyped, but never reached their potential).
