Qatar may be sharing matches with neighbors

Was this part of their proposal?

The prez says it was an idea in the Aussie bid (Aussies proposed to share a few matches with New Zealand). So they took an idea from the Aussie bid and may now apply it to the Qatar bid?

Qatar may be sharing World Cup matches with neighbors
    Friday, December 10, 2010
    The Record
    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PARIS — Qatar's neighboring countries could host games at the 2022 World Cup, according to FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
Qatar was designated the 2022 World Cup host last week, despite concerns the intense heat poses a serious health risk if the tournament is played in summer.

In an interview with sports daily L'Equipe on Thursday, Blatter said Australia's 2022 World Cup bid proposed some matches could be held in New Zealand, and Qatar could have neighboring countries host games. He didn't say which countries.

"Australia, in its candidacy bid, proposed to give several matches to New Zealand," Blatter told L'Equipe.

"I think it could be the same in Qatar and that some matches could take place in nearby countries."

Blatter reiterated that FIFA was right to award Qatar the World Cup because soccer needs to expand from its traditional strongholds.
"With Qatar, we are opening football to a new world and a new culture," Blatter said.

"The Arab world, which has tried several times — with Morocco or Egypt for example — to host the World Cup, could legitimately lay claim to hosting this."

Qatar also beat out the United States, Japan and South Korea.

Qatar has huge financial means to ensure a state-of-the art cooling system in stadiums and training grounds to combat desert heat.
Ruled by the Al Thani family, the tiny Gulf nation has committed $42.9 billion for infrastructure upgrades and $4 billion to build nine stadiums and renovate three others. All the stadiums plan to keep temperatures at about 81 degrees.

Blatter says money was not a primary motivation for awarding the event to Qatar.
"If we had wanted to make money, we would have gone to the United States," Blatter said.

"You must not forget that they [Qatar] have been making efforts for a while and have already hosted FIFA competitions" like the under-20 World Cup

Why will World Cups in Qatar and Russia be so much better than anything that England could put on?

Why has this all come up now? The stuff about playing in January, and this? Are they just poorly organized and prepared or were they trying to hide the fact that they're not as capable of hosting the World Cup as they tried to show.

Who the fuck knows? This shit certainly should have been mentioned in their bid though. The more I see shit like this the more convinced I become that the bids, the proposals, the technical reports, etc. were all an utter waste of time. They're probably using the technical bids for scrap paper at this point. I bet some of the voters didn't even look at them. Because after seeing shit like this and the shit about moving the World Cup to January, both of which were not mentioned in their proposal, you have to conclude that the proposals were irrelevant and they were going to give the World Cup to Qatar regardless of what their bid was about.

It's good that we wasted all that fucking dough on it, especially with unemployment hanging around 10% and a national deficit of almost $2 trillion per year, total debt tag approaching $14 trillion. Good time to be wasting millions on a futile World Cup bid that was cooked from the git-go.

All very true. All the time, money and effort put into the bids were all pretty pointless really, the only thing FIFA really care about is who could make them the most money. Most of the people in the voting committee barely have anything to do with football, they're just wealthy businessmen. What the fuck is up with there being one from Tahiti, one from Cyprus, one from Trinidad and Tobago? Their countries are shit at football.

In as much as England would never have absurd restrictions on journalistic freedom like Russia does, or absurd restrictions on personal freedom as Qatar does, I agree that England can't even dream of having a World Cup like those two nations.

In FIFA's defence, they did say they wanted a World Cup in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. There was no point in us even bidding for 2018 becasue it was gonna be in Russia no matter how good our bid was.

We probably would, we had a far superior bid to Russia, but thats not the point. Blatter said he wanted a World Cup in Eastern Europe for 2018.

So what was the point of England, Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Holland even bidding? FIFA are a joke, yeah... Let's kick racism right back into football again.

That's the point. It was pointless for England, Spain/Portugal, the United States and Australia. And given the debt situations of each of them, it was a reckless waste of resources.

Well, there was always a glimmar of hope for the other bids. England's bid was more confident as we had the best by far.
