Yes. If I make eye contact with someone, I'll look away for a couple of seconds, then look again to see if they are still staring at me. If they are, it is a bad sign.

I never look away. It somehow has gotten into my mind that if I look away when someone looks at me, they'll interpret that as me being afraid of them making it more likely for them to try to fuck with my person.
I don't know if that is true but I've rarely had people fuck with my person so I continue to do it.
Edit: I realize that makes me sound sort of paranoid. But I prefer to call it extra cautious.

I look away unless I'm really not paying attention. I stare people down sometimes when my mind is wandering. I find it quite uncomfortable making eye contact with strangers though.

I always look away after about half a second. Unless it's a blind person, in that case I stare directly at them for a prolonged period of time to assert my superiority.

but it looks shady and awkward as fuck especially when when both of you are intent on keeping eye contact and you just stare at each other for like 4 seconds

I just try and ignore stuff like that. I remember reading a quote that goes like "The amount of energy necessary to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it."
If I start thinking about stuff like that I always end up wasting time thinking about why I disagree.
In general vast theories that apply to the whole of society are mostly bullshit because it's always more complex than people think too. It's just not worth worrying about.

I have a similar philosophy to what zzonked said. "Never waste energy on an argument with someone that could be better used to beat them with a house shoe." It's a simple guideline I've used to shape my life. You can replace house shoe with broken broom handle, a sock with a roll of quarters or a bar of soap in 'em, a wiffle ball bat, a belt buckle ect. A house shoe is just my weapon of choice.
