Platini: Multi-nation Euro would be one-off Empty Platini: Multi-nation Euro would be one-off

UEFA members are still weighing all options for the 2020 European Championship, including the plan of spreading the tournament across 12 cities around Europe, president Michel Platini said on Monday.

Platini said UEFA was waiting from feedback from the 53 European member associations before making a decision -- in the past the European Championships have been in just one or two countries -- but stressed that his multi-host idea would be a one-off for that tournament only.

"Sometimes it is a bit costly and some countries cannot host the Euros because of the forbidding cost," Platini told a news conference in St Petersburg. "We are waiting for feedback to say whether they like it or not and whether in 2020 we can organize a Euro in several European cities -- but only 2020 mind you."

The English Football Association has already registered its interest in hosting the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium should the new format be brought in.

"It is an idea that will be discussed by all national associations within their relevant meetings," Platini said. "It is an idea and that concerns the 60th anniversary of the Euros in 2020, and to carry the game further than just played in one country but extend it to 12 European cities."

Meanwhile, Gibraltar has been admitted as a provisional member of UEFA after a long battle by the tiny British colony.

The Gibraltar FA is one of the oldest in the world but its inclusion in UEFA was blocked by Spain until a victory in August in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

UEFA said a decision on the admission of the Gibraltar as a full member would be taken at the Congress in London in May.

This sounds interesting and I guess their would be no auto qualifer for the hosts. This is also very interesting to possibly giving Gibraltar full membership to UEFA. If they get full membership I wonder if Jersey or the Isle of Man would ask for membership as well?

Don't like it, just means that fans and players have to travel across the continent rather than between cities to get to games.

The scheduling of the fixtures will be awkward in true uefa style, and it just seems more unnecessary effort than having it in a single country.

Which 12 countries and stadiums would be used?

    Wembley, England
    Stade de France, France
    Olympic Stadium, Germany
    Stadio Olympico, Italy
    Amsterdam Arena, Netherlands
    Luzhniki Stadium, Russia
    Ataturk Olympic Stadium, Turkey
Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex (wtf), Ukraine
    Croke Park, Ireland
    Camp Nou, Spain
    Bernabeu, Spain
    Old Trafford, England

With Wembley hosting the final, obviously. It's a decent spread across Europe, wouldn't go near San Siro because of the pitch. I did google some of them before anyone mentions it. Platini: Multi-nation Euro would be one-off 3925848005

No. Millennium stadium would be before both of them.

Won't work; the cons outweigh the pros. Why make it a one-off thing anyway? If you are going to do it, you might as well keep on doing it if it's successful.

I guess this is considered a one off because a lot of people want to eliminate the traditional host nation format. I think this would be good for once in a player's career so maybe once every 20 years.

Isn't it some sort of anniversary? I thought that was the whole point in the idea.
