I wonder who else will bid for this other than the US and Mexico since the rotation rule is long gone.Mexico will join the United States in preparing a bid to host the 2026 World Cup, Mexican football federation president Justino Compean told Mexican media outlets Friday.
GettyImagesHector Herrera celebrates a goal for Mexico.
If successful, it would be the third time the country has hosted the tournament after staging the 1970 and 1986 World Cups.
No other country has ever hosted the finals three times.
"Mexico was a great host in 1970 and 1986, so we are indeed going to bid," Compean said.
"We want to have the World Cup here again, but we know there will be strong competition from the United States.
"Our football infrastructure keeps growing and that means hosting the World Cup in Mexico is feasible."
Mexico initially put in a bid for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, which will be hosted by Russia and Qatar respectively, but pulled out of the running before the vote.
Compean said a World Cup in the U.S. would still be good for Mexico.
"We are three hours from the border and we have millions of our nationals living on the other side so it would be like we were a home team," he said.
"FIFA is always more demanding with all the structures that are needed. The great competitor (for 2026) is the United States, which has great resources, great stadiums, triple the population we have and all that counts," Compean said. The U.S. held the finals for the first time in 1994. The 1950 World Cup hosts Brazil will stage their second finals in 2014. Russia won the 2018 bid, while Qatar will stage the 2022 finals.

Netherlands w/ Belgium would be nice. Hope it is in Mexico, or the USA though.

I believe one continent has to wait two World Cup cycles before hosting it again. With Russia hosting it in 2018 the earliest someone from Europe can host the World Cup is in 2030.

You can probably add Canada to the list.

With the colder climate and so many indoor stadiums a Canada/US joint bid would make more sense for them.

Canada has hot summers. Weather isn't a problem. I don't think a joint bid is a good idea for two big countries.

England aren't allowed to bid for this are they?
Don't we have to wait a certain amount of years now before we bid again?

I think this is a leftover change from the failed rotation policy that I think started in 2006. Once FIFA decided that would not work this was a compromise to keep some sort of rotation going.

Re: Mexico to bid for 2026 World Cup
Why does everyone think Canada has like 15 degrees summers . During summer our average temperature is like 30 degrees without humidity... And its humid as fuck. But seriously if we did somehow buy this that would be amazing.
Hopefully not a repeat of the U-21 world cup...

I think the major problem is that most of the stadiums have roofs (domes) and I believe most of them have artifical turf which FIFA is not too crazy about. Find us 5-7 open stadiums with natural grass and I might consider it as possible.

Assuming it is held during the Summer I will be 37 if that makes you feel any better.

Mate, this is 14 years from now. I'm sure we'll have better stadiums in the future. Professional football has only been big in Canada for probably the passed 5 years, and it's rapidly becoming more popular.Weather130 wrote:Jorlung wrote:Why does everyone think Canada has like 15 degrees summers . Do you think Canada would be able to hold the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the near future? I do think things are quite unfair that this tournament takes place in the US.

Only three countries in the region can support the Gold Cup(and all major international competition for that matter) Canada, US, and Mexico.
They just pick the US because fans from every other nation are already there.

I'd add Costa Rica. Definitely need to rotate that tournament. It's not fair at all that it is in the US all the time. I don't think any other continent does this.

I don't think Costa Rica has enough quality stadiums. I know they have at least 2 that are good, but not sure if they have any others.
Come to think of it, Canada isn't great for the gold cup either. The artificial turf thing discussed above is a downer.
So really it's either the US and Mexico, and there's more money in it in the US.
When I think about it that way, there really is no reason to to take the Gold Cup out of the US. At least in the eyes of the people who decide where to have the competitions.

I dunno man, the US does have home advantage regardless of having bad support...their away record is atrocious.
In 2007 AFC had 4 countries host. So maybe there is a possibility for central america.

Would you go to Brazil? Similar crime rate compared to Mexico and that's only because Mexico's has risen ever since the drug battles, particularly in the north. Not to mention South Africa worse than both in the respect. More than half of the 50,000+ murders in Mexico are in two states, there are 32.
Their are some cities that are really safe and prosperous like Queretaro. It's like any other safe city in Canada or the US. Mexico City has also progressed a lot in all levels. It is safer than many major US cities. + Abortion and gay marriage is legal there. Hooray for left-wing politics!
