Well no. Since we are apparently using the decision dates, then its been 22 years (2010 - 1988 = 22).

I am just part of the Ministry to Eradicate Misinformation. And Jay said under 20 years. So that's at least a difference of 3 years.

Sorry mate that was awful maths, I must have been thinking 2022 is tomorrowScuba Steve wrote:2018 - 1994 = 24 years (not that we can win this one anyways).
2022 - 1994 = 28 years
Not sure how that makes it twice in under 20 years.

Re: Decision Day: World Cup 2018/2022
No problem. It does seem much closer, because the last cup here was only 16 years ago, and if we win, it will seem like it will have been so soon afterwards.
But by the time the tournament is actually played, it will be almost 30 years (assuming we win of course).

Still, 30 years is no where near 56. You'd have hosted it twice in 3 decades, us twice in 6

We should host the World Cup but because we are far more developed football wise than most of the other contenders we won't get it.

Not sure why you keep talking about us though. We aren't going up against you guys, so how long its been from when we hosted one to another is rather pointless.

Yeah, but originally I said it'll be a joke if we don't get it, because we haven't hosted it for 56 years (come 2018 anyway)

Re: Decision Day: World Cup 2018/2022
I've read over all the bids for 2022 and some of those for 2018.
In terms of 2022 I must say that Qatar's bid is wildly impressive, almost out of the world. I'd even challenge whether they could do it all not to mention the time frame. I wasn't very impressed by Australia's bid, it just looked rather boring. Attendance there could pose a problem. South Korea and Japan should be eliminated from the bidding as far as I'm concerned. They've just had a World Cup. The USA, while I may be biased, is the best choice. Very little risk involved with choosing the USA. Huge stadiums, good accomodations, good weather, great transportation, and not dangerous.
1. USA
2. Qatar
3. Aus
4. Japan
5. South Korea
The World Cup in 2018 is perhaps a more challenging choice. Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Ned both have decent bids. England don't quite have the best bid but are still favorites to get the tournament, maybe over exaggerated by the media. Russia have a strong bid in my opinion and would certainly be one of my top choices.

Re: Decision Day: World Cup 2018/2022
If it was based on marketing value alone, Qatar would get the bid hands down. Magificent campaign. They say you can't put lipstick on a pig. But fuck me if they didn't do it. They dressed up Qatar as more than capable, and even made it attractive. I almost bought it. But when you come down to reality, you remember that it has a grand total of one economic hub, and it's not even that big relatively speaking. There's no way that tiny country, with one semi-major city, can host a World Cup. Good effort though.

I wouldn't say Qatar are necessarily a pig. They are one of the nicest countries in the Middle East! Very similar to UAE.

And saying it's one of the nicest countries in the Middle East isn't saying much.
Have you been to Kuwait or Saudi Arabia? Yikes.

Yes I realize that...what's that got to do with incorrect usage?
Well there is a huge gap between bad and good in the Middle East.

It's not a suitable country for a World Cup. That's the point in using the cliche in this case. Perfectly applicable usage.

You wouldn't think South Africa would be either. But the World Cup turned out terrific.

But none of these countries are capable of hosting a World Cup. Maybe if Qatar and the UAE tendered a joint bid, it would be feasible. Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubia maybe could facilitate it. Big maybe though.

At least South Africa has 6 (or isit 8 even?) viable economic hubs to handle the influx of people and resources that a World Cup brings in. Doha on its own won't be able to handle it.

Re: Decision Day: World Cup 2018/2022
I don't see why not. There is plenty of money in Qatar if nothing else. They are willing to spend loads to accomodate the World Cup. If anything it may be easier because there will be less travelling involved with all of the stadiums very close.

Re: Decision Day: World Cup 2018/2022
I'm sure they'll build enough hotels to accomodate the influx. But it's artificial. When the World Cup is over, they're going to have the same problem Greece has in the aftermath of the Olympics. All of these great new buildings, and nothing to do with them. And a slew of creditors who want to be paid back. They can handle that, as long as natural gas is on demand. But what a waste.

Re: Decision Day: World Cup 2018/2022
Imagine if we won the bid and then tried to have the whole tournament in New York City. Retarded, right?
New York City is about 10 times bigger than Doha.

Re: Decision Day: World Cup 2018/2022
Eh, it's hard for me to apply that because it just doesn't make sense. I guess I see what you're saying because if we built all of those stadiums we'd have to tear them down afterwards. I've read Qatar's plan though and they sort of have a use for most of the things after the World Cup. I get your point though.
