My question remains: why the hell did Mou have Ramos, of all the players, taking the penatly? Hugain, Kaka there are several players MUCH better at taking penalties, but a defender, who can't shoot, to take a penalty?
Forgive me if there is some obvious answer, but I simply do not get this.

Just because he is a defender, doesn't mean he sucks at taking penalties.

I remember in the Carling Cup final, when people saw Charles Adam and Steven Gerrard were to take the penalties, they were almost certain that two goals were in the bag for Liverpool Football Club. However, each happened to miss his respective pen. Then, a few spot kicks later, and who should stride forward to the plate but Glen Johnson, one of the world's finest defenders? Wembley sounded bewildered at this turn of events. However, sure enough, Glen defied yet another stereotype by placing his penalty into the top corner with aplomb and glorious sangfroid, serving ultimately to be the winning spot kick in the final.

Sure, but do you seriously think he nearly as good at shooting and placing balls as, say, Higuain? Higuain, being a striker, practices this day after day. He has also proved that he is calm under pressure, something Ramos lacked in the Shootout. This spotkick had Higuain's name all over it.

Ramos has the veteran status.. much like Terry. He gets to take a penalty whenever he wants.

True, but Johnson, for a defender, has some serious finishing ability. He has scored many a time with his feet. The only reason Ramos ever scores is because he is tall and is a decent header of the ball, bar the rare tap in.
I think all the jokes being made about Ramos is a testament to his awful penalty taking ability. He couldn't even be bothered to hit the goddamn target!
Its just frustrating when a team jeopardize their chances of reaching a CL final by allowing a defender to take, and ultimately miss, a penalty simply because he is a veteran.

Didn't he score a bicycle kick some time in the past few years? (Not that it really matters for the discussion, but...)The_Quilo wrote:Glen Damon wrote:This.

Yeah, and complete beaut. (think it was even nominated for goal of the season):
Quite easily the best goal I have ever seen scored in the Premier League. Majestic.

Was voted 'Match of The Day' Goal of The Season, if that's worth anything.

Came in to post about that, I think Ronaldo already scored a penalty that game, or that might have been another game where Ramos took the pen too.Theo Filippo wrote:

No one know's if Higuian wanted to take one, if a player doesn't want to take a penalty you can't force him or maybe he was listed as the 5th penalty taker for them. Just because he's a defender doesn't mean he's shit at penalties. Lauren for us was a cool penalty taker along with Ashley Cole and Clichy. He went for power, completely fluffed it and damped any hope of going through, it happens. But even if he had scored it, Bayern will have still gone through, it was written in the stars once they had 3 defensive players out of the final

What puzzled me was Robben takes Bayern's penalties, even scored one in the match yet didn't take one in the shootout.

Might have just not felt right about taking it, especially after Casillas getting a hand to it, so he just didn't go forward for one.Chris wrote:What puzzled me was Robben takes Bayern's penalties, even scored one in the match yet didn't take one in the shootout.

I remember that. Lost a lot of respect for the Spanish team (especially the players who did it).
