David Beckham will lead the tributes to Sir Tom Finney at the football legend’s 90th birthday celebrations this week.
The League One clash at Deepdale on Saturday where MK Dons visit his beloved Preston will be transformed into a day of celebration for the great man.
The Lilywhites will host a huge party with the hope of a bumper crowd honouring one of the game’s greatest ever players. Sir Tom (above, right) will be 90 on Thursday.
Beckham played for Preston during the 1994–95 season to get some first team experience, scoring two goals in five appearances – one direct from
a corner kick.
The former Manchester United and England star is among those saluting Sir Tom – who scored 187 goals in 433 games for the club. And the man who loaned Becks to Preston – Sir Alex Ferguson – will also pay tribute by video, along with Prime Minister David Cameron and FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
FA chairman David Bernstein will attend the game, which takes place a day after a charity football match between an England legends XI and a Preston legends XI.
The club’s chairman Peter Ridsdale expects to boost gate numbers for the MK Dons clash – and said family entertainment and prizes will be part of the show.
Ridsdale said: “Sir Tom Finney was one of the greats, both on and off the pitch.
“He was not only one of the best players the world has ever seen he was also, and remains, a true gentleman.”
Capped for England 76 times – scoring 30 goals in the process – the winger was then knighted for his many services to football and feted for his remarkable loyalty to one club.
The pride of Preston also put his career on hold to serve his country in the Second World War.
