Greatest English Player Ever...

In their prime.

This has nothing to do with longevity or what they won, just who had the most ability.

I'll only shortlist players from my lifetime because I know nowhere near enough about players from the 70's or before then to judge their ability, Maybe you do though so contribute..

My shortlist:

Alan Shearer
Paul Gascoigne
Paul Scholes
Steven Gerrard
Matt Le Tissier

Le Tissier.

Scholes

Wayne Rooney.

John Terry

Gazza had the most natural talent in my opinion, Wayne Rooney coming pretty close as well. The likes of Bobby Charlton, Le Tissier and Barnes all more or less lived up to their potential. Gazza never did.

Gerrard in 04/05 or 08/09

Barnes never lived upto his potential, he was a donkey at International level.

Paul Scholes is the best I've seen week in week out, Robert Charlton from what I've seen and heard of him.

England have a tendency to fuck over their best players

If I'm not mistaken that was due to how he was played rather than how he performed once he finally was put into a good position?

All I've seen and heard is he was played too much and didn't deserve to start half as many times as he did.

Either way I don't rate him on the level of players in the OP.
