There are some disadvantages to not having ME2 and even ME1 saves...but you can do without it.
I think you can't romance most people from the older games unless you have the save.....and some don't show up at all. (I know of at least one....because I looked at a walkthrough of a mission and one of the people who would be there if you had a save wasn't......though as far as I can tell it didn't make a difference).

Just finished ME2, went crazy when I saw Jack falling off that platform. Thought she was going to die man.
