Sean's right, it's about Independence v becoming part of Ireland. Religion just became a way of defining the boundaries. Same way that Catholics attach to Celtic and Protestants attach to Rangers. There's violence on behalf of football in NI but that's not the real reason behind it.

You can't assume that Catholics want independence and Protestants don't though.
If you're attacking people based on their religion then it has everything to do with religion.

That is the assumption made though.
And Im just saying in relation to you're (was it you?) statement about sending them to science school and ending Religion or something, that would have no real impact on the violence, there would still be motives for fighting.

Maybe, though not as much.....as if there was no religion you'd have no way of knowing unless the person involved themselves.
Not that you can just walk down the road and say "Look....he's a Catholic...I can see it in his eyes" anyway?

Exactly. I don't think my dad gave a fuck about what happened to Ireland, but he regularly had to hide the fact that he was Catholic so that he didn't get beaten up.

Its based mostly on what area you're from, if you see someone in a Catholic or Protestant area its just assumed they are Catholic/Protestant. Thats why loyalist and Republican gangs would go into these areas and just attack anyone they saw.

Well they go hand in hand there. Politics influenced by religion. Nationalists/catholics and unionist/protestants
I know, Im from Northern Ireland
What I mean is, its not about the specifics of the Religion, which some people are using as an excuse to attack religion, if there wasnt religion aspects, their would still be political aspects to fight about.
I agree with you Sean, just pointing out they go hand in hand. And I agree with your second point as well. If you look back. those who were planted and given control over the indigenous population were a different religion. However, if they had have been the same religion, the same fight for sovereignty would have occurred. But there is no doubt there's sectarianism as well, well discrimination against Catholics is what started the troubles.

The way I see it...
It was also about achieving equality and the only way Catholic's in Northern Ireland could see this happening, was through a united Ireland, because it will never happen in a unionist controlled state backed up by the British. So what I meant was, it's political views which have been shaped by discrimination against a certain religion, in this case Catholics.

In regards to the article, which I should of read before but clearly didn't as I'm stupid, I'm not surprised at all. Belfast's a rough place, I hate being in there at all, even for an hour.

County Tyrone. What about you?
EDIT: I just read the whole thing now, the whole fact it's because he was a "taig" is fucking ridiculous. It was bad at first but this protestant-catholic thing is so bullshit.

Cool. Do you enjoy living in Northern Ireland in general? I fucking hate the place. I would gladly locate my family and friends to another country and then bomb here, there is that little to do.

Exactly. I'm fucking dreading going to Belfast uni, even though that's 2 years away. Belfast is that bad of a place. I'd gladly go to Liverpool or somewhere but I'm a pussy who wants to see his family at weekends.Sean wrote:I do not

I'm not sure really. I was thinking either it or Jordanstown. I think my mate told me Jordanstown is kinda outside Belfast so I'd be much more for that option.

Curious to see if you agree with me about the role religion plays Sean?

I know this wasn't asked towards me but I'm going to add my point if I may. I think a united Ireland would be fucking chaos. I could honestly see a war breaking out or some shit. The Maestro wrote:The Maestro wrote:The way I see it...

I thought I would bump this thread to post this video, it's a guy responding to comments made by a Unionist politician, who was trying to excuse the attack on the Catholic teenager. Yes, the guy in the video looks like Wolverine, but he completely demolishes the politician.

You can't blame it on religion, people will use anything to get into a fight with someone else, unfortunately religion is one of those things.
