In the Netherlands during the final years of Spanish rule, Dirk Willems was tried and convicted for being an Anabaptist.
One day, Willems escaped from the prison-converted palace he lived in and was running across the frozen moat. Seeing him escape, a guard from the prison ran after Willems, following him across the lake. Willems had lost much weight during his sentence and simply walked across the thin ice, while the prison guard was heavier and fell through the ice.
In a true act of heroism, Willems aided the fallen guard out of the ice, saving him. Unfortunately, the guard was unsympathetic and arrested Willems, sending him to a higher security facility. In his memory, there is a street in Asperen, Holland in Willems’ honor.

What a cunt. But then again, he could have lost his job if he let him go.

Tbh, what did you expect to happen? He was hardly going to let him escape, lose his job etc.

No. That will look good for him if he gets a chance at parole.

Think you might have got the time-context wrong.

He was also imprisoned because of believing in the wrong religion, so it's not like he deserved to be in prison.

Good for saving the guard, but I don't blame the guard for arresting him.

If I was the guard I would have pretended I couldn't move because I was fucked from the cold water and let him go.

I do, poor guy got burnt to death for A) having the wrong religion and B) not letting an innocent person die.
I'd be pissed if that's how my life went.

Or you could just leave out the whole saving part and just say you slipped in a puddle or something.

Do guards know what prisoners are in for? He was just doing his job. I wouldn't have minded if the guard let him go for saving his life, but I can't blame him for doing his job though.
