7.0 is nearly 100 times less powerful than 8.9 by the way.

Re: Another Earthquake In Japan
Oh well. Nothing too shocking. There will be hundreds more in Japan this year, some with a much lower magnitude, some with a similar one, and some may even be higher. That's what they get for being on a plate boundary. I don't understand why people seem shocked when Earthquakes happen all the time in the same places. It's natural.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about.ResurrectionRooney wrote:7.0 is nearly 100 times less powerful than 8.9 by the way.
Depends.kyro7 wrote:Is 7.0 big?
Richter Magnitude scale measures how much energy is released in an earthquake. Not how powerful the earthquake is.
A shallow 7.0 earthquake can reek huge amounts of damage (like in Haiti) while a more powerful but much deeper 8.6 earthquake could leave (for example, Chile of the same year) an area relatively unaffected. The area the earthquake affects also is a huge factor on how damaging it is, as the earthquake's waves can be spread over large amount of land (ie Chile) and thus less intense or in only a rather small area for mass devastation(Haiti).
