Chelsea began their pre-season campaign with a stunning victory over Australian side, Central Coast Mariners at the Bluetongue stadium this afternoon. Chelsea hit eight past the Mariners and are set to play current Australian champions Brisbane Roar, after they pulled of an unexpected win against the newly promoted Premier League side. Despite Chelsea’s comfortable victory, Alexander Wilkinson hit the crossbar from an astonishing range mid-way through the first attack of the game.
That, of course didn’t affect Chelsea’s confidence going into the game as they admittedly regained possession with centre defensive midfielder, Michael Essien who strung a beautiful through pass across the pitch gifting an early goal to England’s young international, Daniel Sturridge. Twenty minutes then passed which saw Chelsea score four more goals, courtesy of Frank Lampard, Juan Mata and Fernando Torres. The half time whistle went, with Chelsea leading by four goals.
We aren’t aware of what Chelsea were told in the dressing room at half time, although Chelsea took their foot off the pressure. They sat back, relaxed, and defended for ten minutes and welcomed several attacks from the opposition. However, the substitution of Fernando Torres for Didier Drogba saw Chelsea turn their game around, Didier himself managed to get one too which was shortly followed by a second goal for Frank Lampard.
The Mariners, who were exhausted and already arguably finished, kept throwing around sloppy balls, giving easy balls to Chelsea’s strikers, who had already tasted the goal mouth, and they both tasted the juice of the net once again. Perhaps it wasn’t the most respectable victory, although that didn’t remove the smiles off the Chelsea players. They had won, and were set to play Brisbane the following day.
*I have ignored predictions for this game, seeing as I only received one. Predictions will start at the beginning of the season.*
