Why? A larger pool of talent means more chance of success.Weather130 wrote:ilJuventino wrote:^ He's Angolan. He was born in Basque country though.
Well since this guy was born in the Basque country then this is not really news. I think that Athletic Bilbao will consider signing anyone born in the Basque country no matter their background. I wonder if Bilbao would change their ways if they were relegated and some of their stars left?

I think they would change but since they have been doing this since whenever they started playing football it would be very hard to change. I am not sure if one single relegation would be enough for them to open up the team to anyone.

Re: Athletic Bilbao's First Black Player
I wonder what would happen if some young talent comes up and says something like "I always dreamed of playing for Athletic Bilbao but I was not born in the Basque country, so I am crushed." I doubt this would ever happen but it is a possiblity.

It would depend on whether he had Basque/Navarrese roots. If not, then I don't know if they'd make an exception.

It's not only Basque roots, I believe it's anyone who was born or has grown up in the Basque territories. Would make sense, because I remember checking the Bilbao youth team a while back and seeing some black kids that weren't born in any Basque territories.

This could be a great money maker for Bilbao. You train these kids while they are young and once you think they might be good enough to the senior side you sell them.

If they want to be competitive with the best in La Liga, then it's the obvious route to take. Locally developed talent regardless of origins in addition to all Basque blood players.

Lots of South American Basque players too. Diego Forlan for example.
Wasn't there a famous Mexican-Basque player/coach too?

I remember him having a decent potential in FM10, and hearing he was starting for Benfica that season... His career must've gone kablooey...

I think Bilbao were also interested in Espericueta from the u-17 Mexico team. They said that the last name meant he had Basque origins, but his father said that from what he knows his grandparents and so on, have all lived in Mexico.

One thing that I fairly sure about is that these guys are laughing big time with all the home grown talent issues in England.
