Fifa's Sepp Blatter: settle race rows with handshakes
• Sepp Blatter denies racism between players is a problem
• Fifa president says players should shake hands and move on
• FA charges Liverpool's Luis Suárez with making racist remarks
The Fifa president, Sepp Blatter, has claimed any racist abuse between players on the pitch should be settled by a simple handshake.
The Football Association is currently dealing with two incidents in which a player has been accused of racially abusing an opponent. Chelsea's John Terry and Liverpool's Luis Suárez, both of whom deny any wrongdoing, are still awaiting the outcome of FA investigations.
Blatter's insistence that there is no racism on the field of play is bound to prove controversial – as well as his suggested solution.
Asked if he thought there was racism on the pitch, Blatter told CNN World Sport: "I would deny it. There is no racism. There is maybe one of the players towards another, he has a word or a gesture which is not the correct one, but also the one who is affected by that.
"He should say that this is a game. We are in a game, and at the end of the game, we shake hands, and this can happen, because we have worked so hard against racism and discrimination.
"I think the whole world is aware of the efforts we are making against racism and discrimination. And on the field of play sometimes you say something that is not very correct, but then at the end of the game, the game is over and you have the next game where you can behave better."
Blatter also admitted there are problems over the preparations for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, with personal clashes between the Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff, and Ricardo Teixeira, the head of Brazilian football.
Blatter added: "The World Cup in Brazil must be a great success. There are some problems on different levels. "Governmental guarantees … have to pass by decree to the congress or to parliament and this has not yet been done.
"And then there's another problem, it's a personal problem obviously between the president of the country and the president of football."

This idea is awful. A handshake is a handshake: it means nothing at all. Players should actually be punished, not the victim for being forced to shake hands with the offender.

I know you think that, but I think it's an awful idea. What about it would make this a good idea?

Let's kick racism out of football....but if you can't help yourself, let's forget it happened and shake hands.

Don't think he's put across a very good argument.
I think what he's trying to say is that players might say "black cunt" or "ice cream" or whatever other things......but they're not really being racist. Saying those words in itself is not racist.....so it is possible.
I would like to agree and say that it's just banter between grown men, some of which are rude, careless and loose with their words. But it's quite hard to believe that no footballers are racist....
I would say that Suarez or Terry, whether they said what they said or not...are not necessarily racists. I think people take these things to heart when it's not intended to be like that at all.

If Blatter is trying to say that sometimes in games tensions flare up and insults, sometimes racial ones, are used, heat of the moment type thing.

So what he is saying, it's fine to use all the racial slurs you want as long as you shake hands at the end?

What an absolute nutjob, Blatter is.
At a time when the racial purity ideas of right-wing Nationalists are on the rise all over Europe and when abuse by fans is still directed at players of colour to this day, is is totally absurd for this FIFA official to wish racism out of the way by a simple 'hand-shake'. Players should be an example to their fans and he should stand as an example to all by doing everything possible to root out and punish this behaviour.
How such a man can actually lead one of the worlds favourite sport is beyond belief. There is no racism in football...there is no corruption in football (well only a bit!)
