This is totally crazy and would make the league much more like a two team league.Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has said that he thinks La Liga should be cut down from 20 to 16 clubs, while also criticising the spending of foreign owners in Spain.
GettyImagesSandro Rosell replaced former ally Joan Laporta in the summer of 2010
Rosell told the International Football Arena conference in a debate on Monday that a smaller league would be more competitive.
"My opinion is that our league has too many clubs," Rosell said. "We have 20 and we should go down to 18, then to 16."
With the financial problems in the Spanish game, Rosell also said that he was opposed to foreign ownership of the country's clubs and made it clear that he is backing a plan to share the television money out more equally.
Currently, Barcelona and Real Madrid sign their own broadcast deals and collect vastly more revenue than their domestic rivals. But Rosell believes that needs to change."It is the only league where TV rights are negotiated individually,'' he said. ''Some time in the next three or four or five years we have to put it all in one pot and make the distribution the way it is in Serie A and the Premier League.''

They need to equally share the TV money for a start.

If this goes through.

Re: Barca president: La Liga too big
Spain know they need to act, it isn't just about their clubs anymore. The PL is doing well, they have 5 teams that can realistically get to the quarter finals of the CL most years. 3 of them will be challenging to win it constantly in the near future.
Then there is Germany who already have beaten Italy and grabbed the 4 CL spots. With that, their league should improve even more and with their well run clubs should be able to hold onto them spots and improve.
Italy could make a comeback, they still have quality teams who can progress in Europe.
Then there is the wildcard, Russia. With the amount of money over there and their teams improving, they'll soon be trying to get the 4 CL spots off the top 3 leagues. Not now, but in 5, 6 years. Spain will fuck their coefficient up if they have poor showers like Villrreal in the CL, Valencia will qualify from their group but probably go out in the first knockout round. Barcelona and Madrid can only carry their leagues for so long, think this guy realises it.
Other leagues that COULD make a push with a bit of investment... France, already have Lyon, Marseille and new money bags PSG, always produce good youngsters in that country too. If more owners look to invest in French teams they could soon be progressing too. Alot of their clubs already have small debts compared to Spain as well.

I reckon people are going to be willing to see the greatest footballers in the world skullfuck the likes of Villareal for quite a while yet, regardless of how many Champions League spots they've got. And they're sure as fuck not going to lose any Champions League coefficient points when they have the two greatest teams in the world murdering everyone they face in Europe.

Poland however. I am hopeful in 15-20 years time we will be able to compete in the Champions League. Not challenge for the cup, but atleast regularly compete, getting into the quarter finals etc.

Re: Barca president: La Liga too big
Why wont Russia amount to anything Polska.
CSKA
Zenit
Spartak
Ahnzi (i think that's the name?)
Then there is Rubin. If other Russian billionaires wanna buy a club in their own country then why can't the league progress?

At least Spain is trying to make football how it was unlike England where the Premier League are bribing clubs to get their own ways and the FA do nothing about it.

What if they take the reserve sides out of the same pyramid system as the senior sides? Not sure if it would help but some of the top sides have C sides now and I imagine a lot of talent is tied up there. Barcelona does not have a C team but I believe Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, and Valencia do.

I always wondered why they have them. I doubt they'll wanna get rid of them though because it is where they hoard all of their talents
