Gareth Barry: the Myth
I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I reckon this guy is nothing more than an average midfielder that doesn't offer a great deal to whichever team he plays for. However, he has been continuously picked for club and country throughout his career which is a big shock for me. O'Neill, Hughes, Capello and Mancini continue to select this guy. Benitez was prepared to offload a far superior footballer, Xabi Alonso, and bring in Barry as his replacement....
So basically, what do you guys think of Gareth Barry?

Re: Gareth Barry: the Myth
Don't like him, shouldn't be near the England team- but sadly, we don't have many deep midfielders that can do a better job atm, so he starts.
Sums us up that we were crying out for him to get fit as soon as possible for last year's World Cup.
He's not a bad player or anything. He was good at Aston Villa imo, and started this season quite well.

Milner offers so much more than him.

Re: Gareth Barry: the Myth
Very good player if played right. He isn't the most mobile so having him hold the midfield on his own (like at the world cup) will go very badly. But playing him deep with someone else works well, Mancini does it, Capello has started to play him with Parker and it has worked pretty well. Defensively he is pretty good and he is productive with the ball, there is a reason Mancini hasn't replaced him. He is Xabi Alonso just without the amazing passing.

This is what everyone used to say about Lucas before they realised what his game was all about.

Unfortunately I do, yes. I rarely post anymore. The old EA forum was so much better.

Have always slated him and called him overrated but I've been impressed with Barry at the start of this season.

I have always liked Barry.
average player. Gets too much stick at times though.
wouldn't want him any were near Liverpool though.

Re: Gareth Barry: the Myth
I think he's a decent player. He was good for Aston Villa, he was the driving force in their team. That talent hasn't disappeared, it's just he's surrounded by better players now.
He hasn't impressed me for England though.

Re: Gareth Barry: the Myth
I do think he is one of them players that is overlooked because he isn't setting up goals, scoring goals or making last ditch clearances.

It's commonly know between many fans that Barry is a rather average player, yet people within the game seem to see something in him that we don't.

Players like Lucas and Mascherano do none of these things, why does nobody who knows anything about football call them shit?

Re: Gareth Barry: the Myth
Anyone remember Barton saying this
Maybe that's why.
Barton saved the worst of his latest outburst for 46-cap Barry.
'Did you see the game against Germany at the World Cup?' he asked. 'If you watch the fourth goal, when Mesut Ozil was up against Barry, it was like the hare and the tortoise.
'Barry's got a very good agent,' Barton offered as an explanation for the the former Aston Villa skipper's success.
'He's also discreet and always agrees with the manager. He's like the guy who sits in the front row and listens to the teacher. I certainly don't lose any sleep when I play against him.'
Maybe that's why.

So... nothing like Xabi Alonso then?
Anyway. Average player for the premiership. I don't see him as "great" as certain individuals want me to believe.

Are you trying to say all Xabi Alonso does is making amazing passes?
