Changed the way people listen to music. Countless innovations of technology as well, he's like the Michael Jordan of technology, everyone tries to imitate but can't. Iphone, regular ipod, ipod touch, macbooks, itunes, pixar studios, etc. He's done a lot in the world of technology.

Ah, he was an inventor then? Did he create the Flash drive or something?

Not controversial, I just don't know why this guy is so famous. All Apple did, as far as I know, was repackage things which already existed, music players, computers, phones etc. It was a good achievement in marketing, and he did well to build up the company, but the way it's being portrayed it's more like he's a cult leader.

Re: Steve Jobs is dead.
Seriously, he was the Chairman and former CEO of a large company, but it's not 'Apple Founder dies', 'Apple Chairman dies', it's "Apple 'Visionary' dies", even on the fucking BBC, so he must have done something pretty spectacular even by CEO standards, what was it? His company bringing out a nice looking MP3 player?

I can't tell if you're actually serious, like you said seriously but you're playing down his products massively.

No I'm not, the iPod was released in 2001, I had a Walkman in 1996. Alright so it played tapes or CDs or whatever, but that was due to the technology available at the time, not technology that Apple invented.

I don't want to start arguing his case because I'm not an Apple fanboy that knows everything about their products but I'm sure his introduction of the iPod really did change a lot, the way people got music, listened to it, I mean why would people buy the iPod for no reason and if there were other products like it out there? Not only that he built on the success and now we have things like the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, of course he deserves massive credit, the company is fucking massive.

My friend, I have been asking that question for 10 years. I think his company was superb at marketing itself, but there's no great technological innovation there.

E70 was out before the iPhone, Microsoft were making tablets in 2001, iPod Touch is just an iPod with a screen

It's probably to do with the layout of the iPhone, it's so simple yet effective, also the introduction of the App Store worked wonders.

The iPhone is one of the most used and loved accessories in the world. It completely changed what we use phones for.. The iPod was a revolution, not one mp3 player has even come close to matching it and year on year they better it to be even further ahead of the competition. The iPad; pointless to a lot of people but it's still a great piece of technology and is definitely the best tablet by far on the market. Macbooks, I don't even need to comment on them.
Then there's Pixar which became huge under him.
The man invented 338 things.

I already have a better MP3 player than the iPod, I bought it in 2008. It allows me to listen to music, and change track without taking the player out of my pocket, it provides superior audio quality, and has a perfectly effective way of finding files, I would not swap it for any of these iPods people talk about, other than to sell it and make a profit on it. I was offered an iPhone 4 for free in the past 6 months and turned it down because I'd never use it, because I already have a superior phone.
I don't have a tablet or a Macbook because I have a laptop computer, which does all of the same things, and a fair bit more on top.

What MP3 player do you have better than an iPod? And you can change songs while it's still in your pocket, as well as pause, rewind and fast forward.

Re: Steve Jobs is dead.
What a man, RIP.
And RR, the fact that other companies have created "better" MP3 players, "better" tablets, and "better" smart phones is probably a tribute to the people at apple who have dominated the industry over the last decade through innovation and incredible design. He deserves to be applauded for bringing Apple out of the dead and making them quite possibly the World's most popular company. You're pip-ping right now.

I think they were confirmed as the worlds biggest company a few months ago.

Re: Steve Jobs is dead.
Jobs was fired from Apple in 1985 as the company lost its way and Microsoft-powered PCs seemed destined to dominate the market. When he returned to the company in 1997, the troubled firm was worth just $2bn. He led a renaissance at the company, focusing on design and innovation and setting what seemed like impossibly ambitious targets.
Starting with the brightly coloured iMac, Apple redefined the consumer electronics market at a time when the internet was just going mainstream. The iMac was followed by the iPod, which revolutionised the music industry. Then came the iPhone and the iPad. Each new release has driven Apple to new heights. But while there have been misses – Apple TV looks like a dud – the brand has become synonymous with style and innovation.
One of Jobs's early goals was to surpass Dell. When Jobs returned to Apple Michael Dell was asked what he would do in Jobs's position: "What would I do? I'd shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders," he said.
In January 2006, with a value of $72.1bn, Apple surpassed Dell. In May last year, Apple achieved a huge milestone, passing Microsoft in market capitalisation.
Microsoft (presently valued at $205bn) was the largest company in the world by market capitalisation for two years in the late 1990s. Now Apple has left all its tech peers behind and is jostling for position with the oil industry's biggest beast.

Re: Steve Jobs is dead.
Apple TV, the G4 Cube (remember my father's coworker had one, still uses it as decoration) Apple under Jobs have plenty of failures but they were all innovative ideas that were probably a bit too ahead of the time, but they never stopped trying to make new things, props to Jobs of course but the team behind him has been incredible, which is why I think even after he resigned at CEO and his death Apple will remain strong, shareholders will probably sell stock cause that what people do but I think they will be ok.

Re: Steve Jobs is dead.
I am actually with ResurrectionRooney on this one, he hasn't said anything wrong. Jobs was one of the best marketers in the business but he was not so much a pioneer for technology as is often made out. The man has still had a huge effect on countless people's lives and deserves plenty of credit for it. May he rest in peace.
