In biology, we had to give caffeine to these little water fleas and measure it's heart rate. One of ours died cos it's heart gave out, and I felt bad.

Yea! That's a good one actually, it's weird to think everyone else has their own internal monologue thing, and does it sound the same to everyone, how does it even work?

Yes, I get that (although not at the age of 6, I'm not that exceptional). Mainly Truman Show syndrome.

Yea I saw that RR, buying back the freehold for the land. Surely they must have a pretty good chance of finding a good spot build, if they're making this move

Actually reading it again it doesn't look like that much. £10m is nothing to Chelsea, considering it doesn't count towards FFP, it's probably more of a fact finding exercise than anything else.

I'm not familiar with Descartes' Evil Demon but I'm assuming it's similar to Plato's Allegory of the Cave. In any case, I often empathize with the protagonists of Allegory of the Cave.

I'm confused with Descartes Evil Demon, does he actually mean a malevolent creature or does it represent something internal in us?

Plato was a power hungry, schizophrenic maniac.

It's a hypothetical powerful creature which he theorised could be providing all his sensory input, everything he saw, everything he heard, even mathematical perceptions. He came to temporary conclusion that the only thing he could be sure of was the fact that he himself existed in some capacity - Cogito Ergo Sum, I think therefore I am, anything else could be part of an illusion.

He later came to the conclusion that this couldn't be true because God exists (using the ontological argument, which is a crock of shit) but the original theory about the Evil Demon, I reckon that's sound.

Wow we actually learnt about the ontological argument in RE recently Laughing I agree it's crap, even though I believe in God. Many cultures conceived of a higher being in many different forms, they can't all be correct.

It is kind of linked to Plato though,(well maybe more Socrates) the idea that everything we see is an illusion or a poor copy of the real world.

That is the central thesis of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, which I happen to hold in high regard. Curious to see why ResurrectionRooney thinks he's such a terrible person though.

Why don't you read his book? Descartes came up with this stuff as a hypothetical, Plato actually believed in this shit, and thought he should be the King because he, and people like him, could see things that other people couldn't, and that he should have power because he was better than everyone else. Sort of like an Ancient Greek Mal. He also heard voices in his head.

The Ontological Argument proves only that there is a being who is perfect in every respect, it doesn't prove any religion. For me, it would disprove the God of the old testament, because he's a complete cunt.

Have you actually read anything he wrote in context? The allegory of the cave is just him bitching about how him and his teacher are so much more intelligent than everyone else, and how they get vilified and hated for it. I actually sympathise with him in that respect.

I haven't read the work in its entirety but I have read the segments that are of philosophical significance. I'll take your word for it since you're evidently more educated in that regard.

When we hear the words "that than which a greater cannot be thought", we understand what the words convey, and what we understand exists in our thoughts. This then exists either only in our thoughts or both in thought and reality. But it cannot exist only in our thoughts, because if it existed only in our thoughts, then we could think of something greater than it, since we could think of something than which a greater cannot be thought that exists both in thought and in reality, and it is a contradiction to suppose we could think of something greater than that which nothing greater can be thought. Hence, that than which a greater cannot be thought exists both in thought and in reality. Therefore, that than which a greater cannot be thought really does exist,

I can actually follow what he's saying for the most part but does that mean the only thing that is definitely a reality is the thing that there is nothing greater than?

After reading it a few times I think I get it

I think he's saying, This omnipotent being is one you can't imagine anything being better than. This must mean it exists because if it was just in your head, you would be able to think of something greater than it, and if you can think of something greater than it, then it contradicts the main idea that it's a thing that you can't imagine anything being greater.
