I hate when leagues do play offs and split groups, It all seems a bit "gimmicky" to me

I think, or at least hope this is a one time deal because they are making the league a fall to spring league and they needed this format to make the league last longer rather than have no game for an extended period of time.

Anzhi sack Gadzhiyev
Wow! These guys actually brought back the player/manager position. I do not think I have been following the sport long enough to have seen this before. It should be interesting to see if they can make this work or not.Anzhi Makhachkala have sacked manager Gadzhi Gadzhiyev and immediately installed Roberto Carlos as his interim replacement.GettyImagesRoberto Carlos is Anzhi's caretaker
Anzhi have won just one of their last six matches with the arrival of Samuel Eto'o from Inter Milan failing to have the desired impact on results. They are seventh in the table and are out of the Russian Cup.
Gadzhiyev had been under pressure from the club's supporters, who called for his removal during the 2-2 draw with Terek Grozny when they needed a last minute Joao Carlos goal to take a point.
A club statement, reported by the RIA Novosti news agency, read: "The leadership of FC Anzhi has taken the decision to release head coach Gadzhi Gadzhiev from his post.
"The club expresses gratitude to the coach for the work done, and hopes that the experience and knowledge of [Gadzhiev] will yet serve to develop the club and football in Dagestan.''
He may be offered a new role at the club as they search for their next boss. It was rumoured earlier this month that they had approached Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho with a wage packet of £1.83 million each month. Fabio Capello was also said to be on their wanted list.Roberto Carlos, 38, joined Anzhi as a player in February on a two-and-a-half year contract and will combine his playing role. He will be assisted by Andrey Gordeyev

Since this was going to be his last season it looks like he's retiring.

Well he is still around as an assistant manager so he is transitioning to the next stage of his life.
