Considering Roberto Carlos, Mbark Boussoufa, Balázs Dzsudzsák, Yuri Zhirkov, and Samuel Eto'o play for them some people here might be interested in what is going on for them. They are playing at this moment currently drawing Terek Grozni 1-1 and Eto'o scored their goal.

In the league standings these guys are 11-7-6 with 27 goals for and 21 goals against and in 7th place. To make the Russian league a fall-spring year the league this year into a championship and relegation group. Currently these guys are in the championship group by a margin of 8 points.

I've always been interested in Russian football for some reason. Not a fan of the Championship/Relegation group splits though Neutral

I hate when leagues do play offs and split groups, It all seems a bit "gimmicky" to me Neutral

They really are a team to look out for in the next few years. Hopefully they will make an impact in the Champions League over the next half decade or so.

I think, or at least hope this is a one time deal because they are making the league a fall to spring league and they needed this format to make the league last longer rather than have no game for an extended period of time.

Russian football is shit and low quality. The fact Anzhi after investing so much is only at 7th place shows they aren't that great.

I think their biggest problems is that the team is from the area with the most violence in Russia which forces them to fly in for home games. I would think having to travel for home games as well as away games would be a major disadvantage to deal with.

FC Anzhi Makhachkala thread Empty Anzhi sack Gadzhiyev

    Post by Weather130 Fri Sep 30, 2011 12:08 am

Anzhi Makhachkala have sacked manager Gadzhi Gadzhiyev and immediately installed Roberto Carlos as his interim replacement.

Anzhi have won just one of their last six matches with the arrival of Samuel Eto'o from Inter Milan failing to have the desired impact on results. They are seventh in the table and are out of the Russian Cup.

Gadzhiyev had been under pressure from the club's supporters, who called for his removal during the 2-2 draw with Terek Grozny when they needed a last minute Joao Carlos goal to take a point.

A club statement, reported by the RIA Novosti news agency, read: "The leadership of FC Anzhi has taken the decision to release head coach Gadzhi Gadzhiev from his post.

"The club expresses gratitude to the coach for the work done, and hopes that the experience and knowledge of [Gadzhiev] will yet serve to develop the club and football in Dagestan.''

He may be offered a new role at the club as they search for their next boss. It was rumoured earlier this month that they had approached Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho with a wage packet of £1.83 million each month. Fabio Capello was also said to be on their wanted list.

Roberto Carlos, 38, joined Anzhi as a player in February on a two-and-a-half year contract and will combine his playing role. He will be assisted by Andrey Gordeyev

Wow! These guys actually brought back the player/manager position. I do not think I have been following the sport long enough to have seen this before. It should be interesting to see if they can make this work or not.

Time to update this thread since the winter break is over and after the league split. Anzhi qualified for the championship group and is 2-1-0 since the split. They are 15-10-8 for the season and still in 7th. They must finish 5th or better to qualify for Europe. Samuel Eto'o has scored 8 games in 12 games for the team.

Apparently Roberto Carlos has been dropped from the squad.

Since this was going to be his last season it looks like he's retiring. Cry

Well he is still around as an assistant manager so he is transitioning to the next stage of his life. Smile
