Quick question....

My brother and his mate have been arguing with each other all morning about it , he even asked this on facebook:

'Player gets taken down in penalty box by keeper (which is a penalty), ref plays the advantage because ball lands at teamates feet. Teamate takes shot but misses. Does the ref either give a penalty or goal kick?'

What do you think?

Goal kick isn't it? as the advantage was played for the shot.

But the penalty should of been given in the first place

Penalty I think. I remember during Arsenal 3 - 1 Chelsea last season the commentator was talking about it.

I thought you don't play advantage if it is clearly a penalty. When Walcott got as penalty against us he took a shot and the referee still give a penalty.

It's not a penalty. If the ref played advantage and the advantage was taken then it can't be a penalty. Those are the rules of the game.

Does anyone remember Kuyt's penalty that was given against Everton in a EPL game back in January?

Tim Howard fouled Kuyt in the box, the ball landed to Meireles, he instantly shot but missed yet the ref still gave a penalty. I can't find a clip online but thats what they're basing this debate on.

In reality, it's a goal kick.

It justs depends on how shit the ref is and can't remember the rules.

Basically this, I have seen both happen.

Id Say its a goal kick. It would be to late to give the penalty in my books.

Depends, if it's for Man u then the ref gives a penalty, if not then it's a goal kick.

The only time a ref should give the advantage in the area is when it leads to a super duper advantage, like a guy staring at a gaping wide open net. There are very few positions in football that are more advantageous than a penalty kick.

Yeah thats what i thought Mena. The advantage rule dosen't apply for penalties unless it's like an open goal in the six yard box.

Someone has been fouled in the Chelsea box, the ball drops to Skrtel with an open goal 6 yards out and he contrives to miss. Penalty still given.

thats what i am saying, if the ref gave an advantage and it went wide then it would be a goal kick not a pen. but in that scenario you gave just cause Meireles hit the ball doesnt mean the ref gave an advantage, ref cant stop people shooting after he gives a pen

Doesn't make sense to give a penalty after someone carried on playing and missed imo. By all means book the keeper afterwards though.

He gave a penalty after Meireles shot, not sure if the ref just reacted slowly though.

I don't think the ref would ever award advantage in that situation, however if he did and the player missed I believe it would be a goal kick.

If the player that took the shot was in a bad position and there were defenders around him, I would give a penalty.
